look at dell's options, and realize that you can go from their cheapest config to their most expensive with DIY upgrades
I would say it's likely that you have 4 ram slots if you can get 16gb of memory in there, dell should have options for a 2nd hard drive, 2nd disk drive is probably a no-go, that you should be able to determine by looking at the outside of the case
Wait.. Are you buying one, or are you planning on upgrading an existing one. You can check if you can install more ram by going to crucial ram checker and put in the model number of your computer and it will tell you how many slots you have (if you don't want to physically open the case and find out yourself). For hard drive I'm pretty sure there should be an extra slot for another hard drive. You just need to make sure when you get a new one that you have a sata cable and your powersupply has another connector thing for the hard drive (forgot the name - actually I lied, I never knew the name, anyone wanna tell me what that cable is? ) Also make sure your board has more than one sata port. Any specific model you're looking at?

i appreciate the replies. but i'd really appreciate a definitive answer from someone who has owned or worked on a mini- or slim-.
there are a few folks that i know who bought regular dells and i get the same answers from them. they think or are pretty sure they are upgradable, but no one really can tell me for certain if they are.
@slapshot: in regards to the configs, it seems like i can decide to upgrade memory or hdd, but it doesn't necessarily tell me that there are extra bays/docks should i ever want to add hardware.
@aphamx: the crucial suggestion is great. i will check into that, but i still would like to know if i can stuff another hdd in there. research continues.
if you can upgrade it to any 4 stick configuration, then you have 4 slots - now if the basic config or whatever you buy only uses 2 slots, then that means you have 2 empty slots - and isn't a 2nd hard drive an option on their site? (it is on most computers)
maybe if you tell us which one exactly you are looking at/have we can help you better
most of the Dell SFF only have 2 slots minitpwers have 4 best way to tell that is thru www.crucial.com it will tell you what ram you need if it is best in pairs andax size for each chip. Many older dell systems will only support 4 Gb of RAM.
For 2nd hrd drives the SFF usually will only support one and one DVD the issue will be connectors. you will need to go to support.dell.com and enter in your model you can then see the manual and it will inlclude upgrades. I have had issues with the cheaper SFF eating power supplies or the PS fan cools the hard drive the fan goes and cooks the hard drive minitowers have plenty of space and good power supplies.
Sorry there is no blanket answer.
I just purchased some Dell Optiplex 390 and they in the minitower only have 2 RAm slots the 980's have 4, both use the exact same case. the 980 also has 2 more front USB ports.
Above posters are correct - the answer is that it depends on the model.
Your best bet is to go look at the official Dell documentation[dell.com] for the models you're interested in, and check the service guide for instructions on upgrading. If it's upgradable, it will have instructions for adding a 2nd HD, etc.
