UPDATE 2/25/2012 - Got another flier(cost me $15-and i only mentioned to few people so far(read update 2/21 below) for the same offer with a new Expiration date(3/18/2012), whats better is this offer has a different phone number - so try the new number if got shot down on the number from 1st flier. Both fliers are current as of today and attached on the bottom.

UPDATE 2/21/2012 - Reading through the replies - It seems that this thread has helped a lot of SD'ers to receive this(or a similarly slick) offer by either just mentioning the existence of the flier or more commonly faxing/emailing the copy of it to a Comcast rep that asks for it to verify that such a slick offer actually exists. That fact as well as the fact that my neighbors seemingly keep receiving the new versions of this flier on the regular basis(although undetermined interval) gave me an idea. I can try to offer a reward to my entire neighborhood (during a next city hall meet, email list that i can get from local DJ, or just stapling a reward note on a several streets/stores close to my house) in the sum of $15 for each new flier they bring to me - only for the offer i don't already have a flier for (usually means a new/later expiration date and some new/different internal Comcast numbers/codes on it- rest of this offer seems to stay the same(well graphics change as well sometimes)) and only an original flier in the original envelope (to eliminate Photoshoping bounty huntersSmilie. This way i can keep posting new/not yet expired (faxing/emailing expired fliers to Comcast reps will give them a good reason to deny it on the grounds of "that offer is no more") fliers here for my fellow SD'ers. Also if you get a similar flier/offer yourself (or any of your neighbors/friends/relatives do) - post it in this thread and PM me so i can put it into the first/this post(sorry not offering reward for that - but helping fellow SD'ers should be enough of a reward). What do you guys think of this plan? If i get enough reps indicating you think its a good idea - i will offer that reward to keep fliers coming!

UPDATE 2/15/2012 - New Fliers are attached on the bottom (my neighbour got the offer in mail and saved the filer for me) new Expiration is 3/4/2012
UPDATE 2 - Ran some bandwidth tests on this plan - results below

My buddy somehow got the flier for that elusive internet offer that everyone was talking about but i was unable to find anywhere else. Finally got the flier from him and scanned it(sorry about the quality i tried to make it better but my scanner is pretty old and about 5 mins past its expiration date). So far him, his GF, her brother+ his GF and my buds GF's brother's GF's sister(lol-i think i got that right) have successfully signed up by calling the number on the flier(apparently if you just call comcast - they dont know anything about this deal at all). All are in Mass except for the last one- she lives in NH. Out of all only my bud had it installed already-rest are waiting for scheduled appointments(tech to come to house)-but i dont think there will be any problem at this point.

Deal is:
$19.99 a month for 12 months(1 year) and $34.99 for months 13-24(2nd year). Only 1 year agreement(contract) is required so you can cancel right after your bill goes from $20 to $35 in month 13. Best part is - no additional service needs to be purchased(so dont need to sign up for TV or Phone). It is for new customers only(which i think means you didn't have any comcast service for at least last 3 month-not sure on this one though).

Bandwidth Tests on this plan(all ran on 2/15/2012):
Gateway = modem + router in one - (yes i know just modem is less headache but i got real good deal on it and honestly so far it worked perfect as u can see below(same results 24/7 not just offpeak/night).

I just bought new gateway(upgraded from 2 yo SBG900(Docsis2.0(1Down/1UP))) -
Motorola SBG6580 (Docsis3.0 (8channels(4 used ATM) DOWN // 4(1 used ATM) UP) [motorola.com]
FirmWare - SBG6580-3.1.0.0-GA-07-180-NOSH (Old FW(newest is 3.3.1.0 (FW can only be updated by Comcast on gateways and cable modems(thats the reason some people recommend against getting gateways and sticking with 2 separate boxes(cable modem and wire(ed/less) router)- at least FW on the router can be updated by customer then)

All tests on this gateway with this exact plan(Performance(15/3)) ran 2/15/2012:

Just called retentions to see what they could do for me. The best they could offer was $42 a month for Performance. It looks like I'll be canceling and switching it over to my GF who could get $30/month with 2 year contract.

No special link. I just went to Comcast's website without logging in and selected Internet then new customer. Use this link and select new customer. It should auto detect your zip.

!

you wanted a new customer promo, now its not good enough because its only 6 months. c'mon guy.
a lot of people do that and just redo it again in 6 months if they can't get a 1 or 2 yr deal. Just gotta work the system. every area doesn't have the same deals and sometimes you just take what you can get. Regardless, good luck either way you go.

Located in San Francisco Bay Area (South Bay) and my 1 yr promo deal was up so I canceled and signed up my roommate as a new customer. After 4 calls, I accepted that they can only offer 6 month 29.99 performance internet promo in my area at this time.

I want to avoid the self install fee $15, so I scheduled a tech install 2 weeks out and planned to do self install and cancel (I've done this for years). I confirmed modem mac was released from the old account and when I went to sign up, it said there was an error "Order service returned and OPEN Service Request with date after current date +1 on TECH activation." When I called tech support they said I had to have my technician install changed to self install by sales dept to be able to setup internet.
Can anyone else confirm they closed that loophole to get free self install? Am I stuck paying the $15 self install fee to get cables I don't want?

I second that. Just ordered (don't mind the $10 self-install but not the 5day delivery time-window), so opted for $40 technician install 8days out to do it myself. Anyone with recent experience care to comment?

1st guy, are you talking about a self install fee, or a self install kit?? if its the latter, just call them and get a supervisor to remove it, and say the last tenants left a brand new self install kit at the house/apt

2nd guy, so you don't mind the $10 and but don't want a 5 day delivery, but you opted for a tech to come out so you could do it yourself within 8 days? that doesn't make sense. If you can do it yourself via the latter, just pick the self install fee, you don't need a kit

See wiki about the suggestion of doing self activation, by first scheduling for technician call.

no idea what you are talking about.

for those who are going thru the same process:

1. get your own modem and select tech call far out
2. assume you have drop from tap (hook-up from street with prior service), then call 855-652-3446 activation dept once ordered new service
3. provide Mac of your own modem to avoid $7/mo rental fee to activate
4. cancel appt

Thanks for the tips RX8tasy and papitosabe.
I found out more by calling Comcast and reaching someone that seemed like they knew what the were talking about. Last year I got a 1 yr deal and did the trick to schedule a tech 2 weeks out and install it myself and cancel the tech. I recently had my roommate sign up and the person at Comcast claimed it was a 'rented' modem, which is never was, it was purchased new directly from Amazon originally. It was quite a maddening exchange, the rep said that it was a rented modem and was insistent until I said I watched the old account holder order the modem and saw it arrive and activated themselves and I have a receipt from the previous account holder. Comcast claimed they OWN a modem that a customer bought. I had previously started a 'chat' to confirm the old modem was indeed released and the agent confirmed it was, but turns out it wasn't.

This rep said he would put a request for a 'backend group' (that is only accessibly via trouble tickets, not direct to customers) to research and change the status. He said this could take 2 weeks and they would not contact me, I had to 'check in' with Comcast. In the mean time he said I should get a rented modem from a local store and I wouldn't be charged a rental if the research indicated I was the original owner. The system says the modem was on their shelves, checked out and registered within 10 seconds, so they should see it was an error, but he couldn't possibly change that. I also mentioned my bill was showing as CHSI internet buy modem $0.00, and the rep said this was a billing flag and not indicative of the modem status of rented or owned.

Another agent said when I go in person with the roommate with new account, I could get it settled by showing a receipt for the modem. Anyone experience this problem before? Having an owned modem show up as rented when doing the tech self install trick for the previous account holder?

All in all I am pretty annoyed that my roommate and I have to both goto Comcast's local office to try to prove I own something. Whatever happened to the proof being on the burden of the one claiming something? As far as I can tell Comcast can't handle me emailing a receipt to them, they purely operate via phone, text chat (useless usually), and in person.

Update: Went in to the local Comcast service center, showed the CSR the amazon receipt proving customer owned modem and he put it on the new account as a customer owned modem. Said there would be a $15 self install fee even though I didn't take the kit. No $50 deposit for not giving SSN either. Modem is online and registered now.
At 9am there was a huge line before it even opened but we got through it in about 25 mins. No ticket to take so you can sit down, just stand in line with everyone else.
Going in person did help resolve the problem quickly, just have to sacrifice your time. Phone/Chat were useless for this issue.

If on my bill, for example the dates are from 9-14 to 10-15, what days should I cancel my service but still get my money's worth?

Your service is pro-rated so it doesn't matter when you cancel. You will get partial refund for the days that you prepaid but cancelled before using.
