I think many search engines set a minimum character string, such as 4 in this case, to preserve processor cycles. If you were to search for "a" the engine would have to cycle the database and retrieve every entry containing the letter a, obviously that would be close to every single post on slickdeals which is around 25,000 or so. Some engines will first check to ensure the search results do not exceed a set amount, while others, such as this one, simply requests you enter a minimum of four characters.
