I served at a popular 'Apple' restaurant for three years while I was training to become a paralegal. It was some of the hardest work I have ever done. Granted, that was 15+ years ago, but it was still demanding even for a youngster.

I made $2.13/hr. plus tips. While I trained other servers, I made a whopping $2.25/hr. plus tips. As with any job, there are a lot of duties that most don't know about until you start doing the job. I had to clean public restrooms, roll 100+ silverware per shift, refill/put up salad dressing, make tea, cut lemons, etc. Every shift you were responsible for 1-2 sideworks, silverware, refilling/sweeping, etc. your section, cashing out your own till. During my shift we were responsible for helping to run food, seat if the hostess wasn't around, bartend if necessary, expedite food, etc. There are lots of moving parts that make a restaurant work. If I ran food to someone else's table, most of the time the guest would request something for their meal (more napkins, sauces, etc.). So, I was also helping that server get a better tip in addition to taking care of my own tables. We each had about 5-6 tables. It is very demanding and where I live, the tips aren't so great. We had a lot of business people who tipped horrible. I am not trying to stereotype, but the blue-collar workers tipped the best. I hated to wait on a table of women, b/c I knew I would end up with $1 each.

I tip based on service. I usually tip 20% b/c I know how hard it is to put on a smile while you are thinking to yourself that you would love to shake that person b/c they are so rude.

I don't tip based on all the extra stuff they do either, only on the services I received. So we agree. I only mentioned the other stuff often required of servers because double7 was saying how his nephew works harder than wait staff. I was simply stating that some restaurants require a lot more of their wait staff than just waiting tables. Smilie

ETA: I do tip baggers and my hair stylist, but not 20%. The baggers at the commissary usually get 3 or 4 dollars from me. At the commissary they ONLY work for tips, no wages are offered at all. My hair stylist gets 5 bucks. I don't tip my postman, my newspaper delivery person or my garbage men. And for takeout, it's usually 2-3 dollars, depending on the size of the order.
I only get 2 Sunday papers each week. On Monday, my delivery person will leave on my front porch any extra inserts she has so I can get the extra coupons.

At Christmas time, I leave her on my front porch, huge bags filled with swag as a thank you gift. Get this one...she gives me a gift in return. Big Grin

I completely forgot about that! Yes, my mom worked in a place where she had to clean the restrooms, too. Yuk

If I could actually get a paper with all of the inserts, I might be a little "nicer" to my carrier. I only get the Sunday paper and sometimes it's on my lawn, other days in the paperbox. If she throws it on my lawn on a really good coupon weekend, it usually disappears, I never even see it.

Hmm, I have never lived anywhere than California but I still tip 15- 20% for table service and 8-10% for buffett ---- and I am not under the delusion that wait staff get paid less than minimum wage in California.

I think most people in California assume correctly that wait staff at least get minimum wage and still it is customary to tip 15% ( actually 15% is borderline cheap, I think 18% - 20% is more like it).

Waiting tables is hard work & in my area most of the younger staff will give you a head shot if you ask for one but still, I think they deserve their tips.

Do I think our culture would be better off if instead of tips, people actually got paid a true wage? Well, yes but I think it is beyond me & the servers I interact with to change it.

I wouldn't eat out if I couldn't afford to tip.Or have someone cut my hair, or handle my luggage, deliver my paper, ride in their cab, etc. But I have a conscience. You should at least be honest and tell the person beforehand, who's services you're about to use, that you don't intend on tipping them . Instead of just stiffing them afterwards. That would be the halfway decent thing to do.

There's an interesting idea I am guessing I will never try.

Oh, how about the tip for the driver of the moving truck? My guy pulled this one on me last minute, told me I should give them something for him and all the guys doing the boxes. Of course I had no idea what value was customary since I was unaware people even did this.

Again, really? Am I not already paying for the service? What extra is he suggesting they were doing?? In fact, I did have stuff damaged in the move, not that I particularly blamed it on him.

I got a card and signed up for the $4 off $20 and it was emailed to me. How do I know if it is linked to my card, or if anyone can use it? TIA

If the barcode has 13 digits, it's a unique coupon and not tied to any card.

Got J&J Baby Cologne clearanced to .87, used .75 q. They also had an old style aloe lotion 75% off, $1.07.

Today the AM and cashier at one store brought out a printout from Monday of my transaction where the cashier was red flagged for pushing through OS CRTs, Revlon nail, etc. They were so accusatory I am scared to go back. I asked, "What did I do wrong?" and they said it's just the system and I am getting them in trouble.
Ugh.
I wonder what is the actual consequence for the red flag trx?
Remind me, why (if you know) was the OS crt flagged?
And of course, revlon is notorious for their Q problems.

One thing I have noticed at my cvs stores, is they NEVER call a manager for things like this. Problem with a Q scanning? They just start typing it in. They seem to give the cashiers a lot of power like that. Which is really nice to not have to wait for a mgr and then explain it all to them, etc. So a crappy catch-22 for the cashiers if they are getting burned on this.

I had a cashier tell me he gets "red-flagged" if he allows a negative subtotal. Although every other cashier at that store allows it and hasn't said a word to me about it, including supervisors. This particular cashier's English is not the greatest so I couldn't find out more about the "red flag." It actually took me about 5 minutes to understand that he was saying "red flag!" laugh out loud
