Dude, no, it is NOT locked to Verizon, it is an unlocked phone. The best service to use this on is PagePlusCellular. Lots and lots and lots of threads discussing this. This phone works well on PagePlusCellular, they have some nice deals for minutes + text+data, but you can use prepaid minutes only and use the wifi for web access. It is a simple setup with PP, either over the web or call the company. Pretty nice little phone, battery life is good if you shut down all the extraneous crap. The google map app included works pretty well as a GPS like locator.

good deal' but the need for a data plan ruins it for me. I would like to get this for a friend, but he doesn't want a data plan. This phone would be great cause it has WiFi, too. Kind of a shame that carriers don't let you have any smartphone (including ones no longer in production) without an overpriced data plan.

You can use it as an internet tablet. No plan required.

I took a Sprint Pixi and did a radio board swap on a broken VZW Pixi Plus to gain the wifi chip but this saves the trouble of doing that.

Pros:
WebOS is pretty great when it comes to contact and calendar syncing. You'll need to install preware and 20+ patches to "break it in" but it's a nice addition to the tech drawer. Be careful it's quite delicate, I had to swap out the touch panel recently. Go for the $5 touchstone and $5 touchstone cover from VZW online, it's well worth it for inductive charging. Freetether utility from webos-internals, router in your pocket. Terminal in your pocket. Real Linux unlike Android.

Cons:
Biggest negative to this is how laggy it is, EVEN overclocked and it locks up often when trying to take a photo, often not actually taking it. It's also a battery hog if you have any of the radios on. Likes to not register taps and boot up takes like 10 minutes. Web browser is full featured (without Flash) but takes forever to open. Can not run any of the webOS openGL games. No VNC viewer available. No X11 support. Not as good as Maemo by far.

Summary:
Do NOT use this as your primary device. This is at best a secondary (or tertiary) device to carry alongside your primary phone. Good "first smartphone", cheap/"disposable". Still recommended as something to tinker with. Biggest flaw in webOS is that it is a memory hog and Palm/HP didn't manufacture beefy enough hardware to handle it. To top it off this is the weakest webOS device ever made. BTW the difference between the Palm Pixi and Palm Pixi Plus is that the plus has the wifi chip and the minus just has a solder pad for where the wifi chip should go. This deal is for the CDMA version, there is another thread for the $60 GSM version. The devices are unlocked (you may need to download appropriate FW though) but your carrier can decide whether or not to activate it.

I have one of these and not sure what all the hype is about. This thing takes about 8-10 minutes to boot up. Very slow. Yes it has wifi but big deal.

Problem is that it's sold by the OEM shop, and a lot of folks who have purchased from them have been extremely unhappy [received clearly used phones with scratches and dings, though sold as 'new'].

I also bought two of these phones through the one sale a day or similar site last year. They are okay phones - I do use this as my primary phone on PagePlus because it does everything I need a phone to do: talk, text, pictures, calendar, quick web searches and email. However they do seem to be buggy. Mine has a lot of hardware issues with the ringer switch and battery covers [multiple new ones bought at this point], my daughter's phone seems to have none of those issues but her software is glitchy and her phone boots off and on unexpectedly. They are definitely a lower end smart phone. But that's what we were looking for when we switched to PP, so overall we're happy with the forty bucks we spent.

Could I use this for just the wifi connection without any plan at all?
I dont need another phone plan, I need something my wife can use to connect to Google Voice.
Would this do it?

Hi, I can't get my phone work with the Palm Touchstone Standalone Inductive Desktop Charger from Verizon Wireless. I thought it should be just plug-and-play kind of easy, but the charger does not do anything to my phone when plugged in. Any special instruction I should be aware of? Thanks!
