Update on post 115. Have you ever had a potential employer verify your current income?

26,586 3,338 February 8, 2012 at 07:25 AM
I am in the middle of a potential job change. Today is interview #2. This is a technical interview. Yesterday, they sent me the link to fill out their application. They asked what my current "verifiable compensation" is. Why is that any of their business? I only see that as a possible negotiating tool for them. If I put my current salary, it could cost me $5k-$10k in salary for this new potential job. But, if I exaggerate it and they find out, it could cost me the job. The guy I know who is recommending me for this position (and who is also doing the technical interview today) told me to exaggerate it. So, I did. Have you lied about your current income? Anyone ever had a potential employer actually ask for verification?

Tell them your current salary is inconsequential, and they should pay you what they feel you're worth. Nono2

Edit to add: Also tell them they cannot contact your current employer. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Easiest way to verify, pretty sure that's confidential info so they can't go callin up your hr dept to check unless you give them written permission?

Where will you be moving to?

I wouldn't lie about my current compensation....but I don't see how they can legitimately/reliably verify your current salary without asking you to provide proof.

I selected the box "do not call my current employer". They would walk me out if they knew about this. They just promoted me in November. I think they would be a tad pissed. laugh out loud

I've never heard of that but do you have any paystubs with overtime? Or actually a copy of a check/checks that include overtime not showing a breakdown?

That is why I would not expect the company to call...that is starting off on completely the wrong foot! What if you were laid off and trying to get a job? Do they expect you to start at $0? What if you own your own business but want to get out while on top... Put down that you made $2,000,000 the year before selling water outside of baseball stadiums but want something more secure.

Dh is salary too. If he were put in this position it would be hard because he gets bonuses too. IDK it's a weird request.

They already know what I do and what company I work for. That's how and why they are interviewing me. The only thing I can think of if they call me on it is to say that I was including the side work I do for a small company in St. Pete.

Which is completely reasonable. Sounds like you have a plan!
