Deal Details

Last Edited by kcaj32 October 11, 2011 at 01:45 PM
I had the 3mbps dsl from at&t and paying $15 a month promotional rate for 1 yr.
My 1 yr period just expired and I called.

I didn't even mention cancellation when the rep offered me 12mpbs u-verse for $25 a month with free self-install + Free after rebate wireless router and modem. The rebate is a $100 visa gift card.

I had called 1-800-288-2020.

12mbps u-verse - $25 a month
modem + wireless router - Free after $100 visa gift card
Self install kit - free, shipped via UPS
1 year contract (can be canceled within first 30 days)

NOTE: Others have mentioned that you'll get this price only if you have another AT&T service - e.g. land line, tv or cell phone. For everyone else, the cost will be $35 a month for 1 year.

Why this deal is YMMV:

AT&T seems to have different offers based on what channels you go through. Here's a sample of what's been seen

1. 29.99/month $100 for modem (Online Deal, straight from website)
2. 29.99/month $100 for modem - $100 Visa rebate (Online deal and rebate via online chat with CSR)
3. 24.95/month $100 for modem - $100 Visa rebate (Call AT&T, must have existing service)
4. 24.95/month all other fees waived (Call AT&T, must be FORCE MIGRATION from existing DSL and have received notice)

This also varies by region.

U-Verse is DSL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%2...e#Internet

In some areas, at some speeds, it is ADSL2+. In other areas, at other speeds, it is VDSL. VDSL is usually FTTN (fiber to the node) but it is indeed DSL. The reliability of these competing technologies depends more on location than anything else. Likewise, the possibility of receiving 12Mbps ADSL vs VDSL, or not having either available, depends entirely on your location. FTTN does share more infrastructure than ADSL2+ which is fed from the Central Office. If you have 12Mbps VDSL and all of your neighbors torrent all day, you probably won't get 12Mbps. If you have VDSL to your neighborhood though, you don't want ADSL2+ as VDSL is higher voltage and drowns out neighboring ADSL pairs. Also the OP probably lives a block from the Central Office and they did 12Mbps ADSL2+ as VDSL is generally more expensive (to pay for the fiber ran to the node).

Note: If you are getting the free modem/router, it is likely that you will get the 2Wire 3600HGV, which runs on b and g only (no WiFi N) even if the rep told you you would be getting a WiFi N Cisco.
^You only get a 2Wire if you're getting VDSL. ADSL2+ users will get a motorola AND Linksys E1000 for wireless.

Yes, this has been mentioned multiple times. Everyone forced to move to U-verse pretty much get the same deal. Everything related to the installation and equipment are free and you get the best promotional plan available.
And the super easy part is depend on your house. If you have only one phone line into your home for your phone and old DSL and you are keeping your traditional phone, then they will have to figure out another way to use another line to setup your U-verse connection. Seems like they can't share the line used by traditional phone with U-Verse DSL especially you order higher speed (12Mbps+) package(?). Pretty much if you don't have unused line (phone or cable/satellite , etc) that go into your home, they will need to set one up which may take some time.
Not necessarily true. I switched from 1.5 mbps dsl to 12 mbps uverse recently. We have one line coming to the house, and had no visit from a tech for setup. It was all self install.

Do you have tradition copper wire phone also? And are you keeping your tradition phone when you switch from 1.5 mbps ADSL to 12 mbps VDSL uverse? And what was the model of the modem you were using and what modem you got for uverse?

Hmm I'm currently paying $43 for elite(6 mbps) with a $5 credit for 6 months, which brings it down to $38. Has anyone had success getting a better offer by threatening to cancel?
I was able to get two months free. they told me they have some promo coming up in January.

Whatever they were using ~20 years ago. Havent updated anything as far as wiring since remodeling 20 years ago. Keeping traditional landline. Already done the switch. Went from an old 2wire Home Portal 1000 to an 3800 HGV modem.

Wouldn't you be on contract for those 6 months? I don't think you can cancel if that's the case.

I'm definitely not on a contract. I'm month to month so I'm not sure about that. Either way, I called in today and asked the CS rep about any promos. They couldn't do anything for me so i asked to talk to the cancellation department.

Got someone from the US and I told her I wanted to cancel bc my cable company offers double the speed of ATT for half the price. She said she'd look for promos and then came back and told me they didn't have any internet specific promos, but she could lower my bill by $28! Haha, I have never heard of this happening but I'll take it!

Looks like they have a tv promo available, here's what my new bill looks like:
