Secret Santa gift for a 13 year old girl.

estaticxalde 104 26 October 11, 2011 at 02:51 PM
Every year I am a secret Santa for random foster kids . Most of the kids I sponsor are usually 2-6 years old and I have no problem finding something for a kid that age . This year one of my kids has me stumped . She is 13 and I am given no background on what she likes would want or needs . So I ask those of you with someone that age in your life , is there something they all seem to like at that age ? I want to keep it around 30$ but maybe stretch to around 50$. Help!

Since you know nothing about the girl that will be hard--what if you bought makeup and she's a tomboy?? What about a gift certificate to a mall store like Delia's?? Or Old Navy?

Gift cards are pretty impersonal, IMO.

13 is a tough age, especially if you don't know the child. She might be a girly girl or a tomboy.

How about a gc for a manicure and/or pedicure and a bottle of nail polish (could even have that in the gift certificate too, for her to pick out a color at the salon to take home).

That's kind of the perdicaments I fall into. A gift card is not something I see a child getting excited to open on Christmas . But not knowing anything about her makes using a specific gift kinda effin hard.

doesn't the foster home have the kids fill out some sort of questionnaire form with their likes?

I'm in Big Brothers, Big Sisters and my Little is about this age. 13 is still pretty young. A lot of times, activities are a good idea. A lot of underprivileged kids are just bored a lot of the time and don't have a lot to do at home. Just look for something aimed at teens rather than little girls. For example:

- A nice sketchpad and some good quality pencils / colored pencils
- A journal with nice pens
- A craft kit (that you can made without addtl supplies)
- Gift certificates for movies
- Gift certificates for arcades, laser tag, roller skating, etc. that are near her home
- A self-inclusive handheld video/electronic game (e.g. doesn't need cartridges)

I would say put a giftbasket together - some age appropriate books, nail polish, snacks, maybe movie tickets (can probably find a deal on those) and even a t-shirt or sweater general grey or black.;P

If I were you,I would give her some books as presents.
It's pretty important for us to develop the habit of reading at an early age,IMO.

I would 2nd the MP3 player. You can get a decent one.. you could also possibly load it with 5-6 albums of music of current people.

Small jewelry would be nice too.

Even if she is a tomboy (13 - I think they start to grow out of that stage by then) and earings / necklace would be nice.

Good luck!

I saw a 7.1 MP digital camera yesterday at Kmart for only $29.99. It's in your price range and both of my teenagers (ages 13 & 14) are obsessed with taking pics that they can upload to Facebook. I'm sure it's not the best digital camera out there, but these are the kind that we buy for our kids so that we don't have to stress when they take them to school or drop them.

If you go this route, you'll probably want to include a memory card as well... I don't know what those are running nowadays, but they're probably only $5 - $10 for the smaller ones.
