This headset is awesome. I'll pick this up and some camo face paint and a ghille suit from the military surplus store and some twigs and branches from outside so i can give myself an immersive experience on Call of Duty.

The version that only works with the PC is just the headset without the 5.1 decoder box. (You must have the 5.1 decoder box to hook these up to the XBox360 or PS3)

The version in this deal as you have pointed out is the version that is compatible with the XBox 360 and PS3 so it comes with the decoder box.

I also downloaded the user manual and it shows you how to connect it to your PC.

If it's at all like their other headsets it works with any optical source as well as from a pc via an adapter that plugs into the various 3.5mm plugs (if you don't have optical out). I had the AX360 and it worked well for movie watching as well as gaming on the PC/XBOX for ~4 yrs until the plastic bits (that hold it on your head at the correct position) cracked from being sat on one too many times. Every so often I toy with getting another one again. Especially if the new ones are lighter (2.5 hrs was a long time to wear those without a break is my only neg.)

AX 720's are the best ones imo, these TRUE 5.1's with 2-3 speakers on each ear are bad with bass

As for AX720...I've read too many reviews that say they are junk....they do not have true Dolby 5.1...only simulated etc.

do you know how the human ear works? you only have two of them. positioning and perception has to do with about 3 key things. Volume, Delay, and reflection. You perceive sound in your left ear and you hear that it's on the left side, but to perceive exactly where the sound is coming from on the left, including approximation of distance requires a few more things, including (but not limited to) the volume at which you hear it, but also how well you can hear it in your right ear, this allows your brain to judge distance and positioning.

"Simulated" surround in an earphone trumps "real" surround sound... if you put rear drivers on your side, and you lose that delay and reflection/refraction, it's no longer a rear driver... with simulated surround sound, very technically proven scientifically researched algorithms actually mix in left and right sounds, including reflections off of objects and delays to trick your brain into thinking you're hearing actual surround sound... a rear driver in a sealed left ear cup absolutely cannot do this (at least without some processing that doesn't currently exist).


Is the AX720 a great headset? no... it's not, but it's much better than the AX pro, and it's cheaper... as far as the reviews that state it's "junk" or "poor sound quality", well the same goes for the AXpro as they're basically the same headset, with a different driver configuration... same build quality, same mic performance, etc... main difference is 2 decent drivers in the 720, and a handful of tiny crummy drivers in the AXPro.

I've had both (and 15 or so different variations of headsets and mid-fi headphones dedicated to gaming) and if I could i wouldnt pick either (though at this price point your options are limited), but if i had to pick between the two, I would pick the AX720, even if the AXPro was on sale for $49.99..... Honestly i'd walk into any retailer that sells gaming equipment (walmart, best buy, etc) and buy any headset for around $50 and be happier than if i bought the AXPro at this price point.

got some dough and want a package from one retailer, get the Astro A40
want the best with an integrated mic? get the sennheiser pc360 and the astro mixamp
want the best? prepare to spend hundreds, or maybe thousands on a pair of headphones, an amp, and some sort of dolby decoder... even more so if you want a mic and chat functionality.
want wireless? get the px5(00) or wait for warhead.

Discussion can be great, don't really care about this 720 discussion though because these are the AX Pros branded for Black Ops. I don't know what that has to do with 720s unless there are some amazing and cheaper 720s.

is there no wireless option for the AX720 class?

i am using a G930 Logitech at the moment. Wonder if I should upgrade

if they're not on 5.8ghz you'll have interference and you wont be happy... i wouldn't recommend something like the x31 from turtle beach (less than the AX720) because the wireless is crummy, and it's just a stereo headset.

g930 is nice, even for a 2.4ghz set, and if you're just gaming on PC you'd probably have to spend quite a bit more to get a true upgrade to that headset (if you want to stay wireless)
