I just purchased a used touchpad with both Android and Web OS installed. Can someone tell me how to do factory restores without losing the Android partition? Or is it better to just start with a clean install of Android as well? Any suggestions would be helpful!
If you restore webOS to factory settings, then you'll lose Android altogether and then have to reinstall it.
So there should be a good reason for wanting to restore webOS, as it'll give you a lot of work to do it all over again, specially if the previous owner put preware in and all the fancy modifications, so if you don't mind telling us the reasons for doing webOS over again, then there may be shorter solutions, like to just get rid of the other person's data, etc, or to change it to your name.

There is no android partition in the traditional sense. It uses the same file-system that webos is using but overwrites the boot loader.

So, obviously, if you restore webos you will lose the files/directories that android needs but you won't have to re-partition to get anything back (just run a few simple commands)

I have created a problem on my TP (CM9, 12/2 Nightly) that I am hoping someone can help me repair.

I downloaded the 12/9 Nightly, and didn't notice that it was an incomplete download (0.0 MB), and installed it using Goomanager. TP rebooted to bootloader stating that "TWRP Failed", and "Press Select to Continue"; which brought up the bootlader again. If I selected Cyanogenmod it would say "OK", put never proceeded. I reset using home+volume down+power, and it rebooted using Cyanogenmod, but the audio was very raspy. I reinstalled Goomanager, and used it to try to recover to 11/25 Nightly. Now it begins to reboot with the HP logo, followed by a black screen with an exclamation point in a triangle and "www.palm.com/ROM" beneath it. Any attempts to reboot result in no bootloader and the triangle/exclamation point.

I was prepared to start fresh, but If I plug the USB to my PC the touchpad is not recognized in My Computer, even after restart of the TP. I can boot into USB mode (volume up + power), but TP is still not recognized in My Computer.

I have no idea where to turn next, so any help would be appreciated.

TIA.

Others may know a better solution, but it sounds like you'll have to start from scratch with the webOS Doctor.

I logged into my HP account to download WebOS Doctor, but the download never starts, and eventually times-out. I downloaded a version (3.0.5, based on info from my HP account) from the Wiki, but after initializing WebOS Doctor there is no progress ("Next" is grayed-out) on the stage that says "Connect your device directly to your computer with USB cable. Do not remove battery or disconnect your device during this process." Is it doing anything (it has been about 20 minutes)?

Thanks.

I'm a bit rusty on my webOS, but one thing to check is if Novacom is running in the processes in your task manager.
If not, you'd have to install the novacom drivers before trying to do the Doctor job.
I presume that you hold the volume up and on/off buttons simultaneously to get the USB symbol on the TP's screen, when you connect the TP to your puter for the Doctor job, correct?

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I finally got around to giving it a shot at getting CM9 loaded on. Followed the steps in the wiki, but for whatever reason, it would load clockwork mod without CM9. Eventually, I got the CM9 zip to unpack as well.

Running great so far. Thanks again.... it makes my touchpad definitely more used now. People are right.... it's not about the hardware, it's the ecosystem too Smilie

Glad it worked out for you.
I know exactly what you're talking about, with regards to the bootloader going in without CM9.
It's happened to me 2 or 3 times and I have no idea why, but then I would flash CM9 and it worked right away.
Sometimes the Play Store (gapps) doesn't go in the first time either, but that too, loads up fine after a 2nd try.
I'm especially glad to hear that the wiki instructions worked for you.
There were contributions from several posters, to get the end product, which was aimed at being simple, but still complete.
Have you had a chance to try some of the suggested apps and settings? Overclocking? All the adjustments that should be made in Settings?
An optional interface like Nova Launcher?

Nope... Im a noob at this. It's really a backup tablet for my kids, so if it can get this far with google play and the amazon app store, that's good enough for me Smilie

Thanks for your help, Rocky.

nope... it failed for me yesterday too.

Which, in a way, was good because I started playing around and found an interesting file in /system/media called 'bootanimation.zip'

It's the splash screen animation you see when you boot the thing up. Looks very easy (if time-consuming) to make your own and to add a music file too. I suspect you could convert any animated gif
