Retail prices @Amazon are highly inflated. I got a Swiss Gear backpack from Staples last year during a sale and the zipper broke only after 6 months.

The lifetime warranty on the backpacks isn't serviced by Wenger, the company that does service the warranty wants pictures as proof before they even consider an RMA. Then if they decide you're worthy, they still reserve the right to charge you if they think it's caused by wear and tear or abuse.

Also, you pay to ship to them (fairly standard) and also pay to have them ship it back (not standard for warranty claims). I don't remember for sure, but I believe I was told it was $20 for return shipping. I ended up getting a new backpack for about that price (I think it was $15 after coupon from Costco, the FUL brand backpacks they normally carry), and though I miss the extra (and generally more useful) pockets on the Wenger, I certainly don't miss the extravagant limits they place on their warranty.

ETA: I didn't abuse the backpack, but both of the zippers on the laptop portion broke, rendering it impossible to use. A broken zipper could be caused by normal usage (if faulty) or by abuse, so I didn't really want to pay $30 ($10 to ship it, $20 to ship it back) plus have to also possibly pay for the repair itself. I also just think it's incredibly weak of them to make money off the return shipping, I imagine it both prevents many customers from using the warranty and, for those who actually do, defrays the cost of the repair. They can claim a lifetime warranty and not really have to worry about it.
