Most hotels do not have kitchens...you would need a timeshare or condo or house. Marriott Ko'Olina offers rooms with kitchenettes and full blown kitchens in their 1 and 2 bedroom. www.vrbo.com is a great place to check for condos and homes. When I was there in March of 2009 I drove around the island probably 3 or 4 times. The northshore's drive is nice and so is the east side...everything near honolulu/waikiki is just mostly freeway driving. www.gohawaii.co www.hawaiigaga. Hate is a strong word... but I really really really don't like you

So as far as kitchens go...not every waikiki hotel room has it.. typically its the cheaper rooms...at lower quality hotels... I believe the waikiki Banyan has 1-2 bedroom rooms that have kitchenettes..also the semi ghetto pagoda hotel |

I would say go to Barnes and Noble and thumb through the travel section to find the Hawaii book you like the best. They probably have one called 'Oahu with Children' or something like that. Buy the book and study it. I never used to do this, and then realized it's worth a $12-18 investment to read a professional book with pictures and suggestions as opposed to spending hours on internet reseach (which is actually a good supplement, but I think a travel book is much more useful). We had a quick change of plans recently in NYC on a trip and thanks to the travel book I brought with me (as well as my recollection of a section from the book that I read right before the trip), we were able to find something else to do immediately.
Hope this helps and have a great trip! |

Went with our 2 kids (ages 11 & 9) in April '11 - can offer this:
We stayed @ the Grand Waikikian on the Hilton Hawaiian Village property in Waikiki. Fireworks on the beach every Friday night!!! We booked trip for 12 days by using Priceline.com for the 1st half of the vacation (5days) and stayed @ an Outrigger hotel thru Priceline. We moved out to the Hilton for our last 7 days. It was Heaven! We used the Hilton beaches even when we weren't sleeping there the 1st 5 days; just drove down. Parking - there is NO way to get around paying $20+ a day for parking "somewhere" in Waikiki. You won't need a car the whole time - you can actually plan to use it day by day & rent daily. We'll try that next time. There is a free shuttle that goes around Waikiki....cute open air - looks like a San Francisco tram car Waimea Bay was my kids favorite beach! HUGE (30/40ft) rock to jump of into water. Great waves but no lifeguards. Wintertime I hear the surf is so high you cannot access beach. Sunset Beach - says it all! By a snack (or dinner) to eat on the beach & watch the sun go down. Beaches - Diamond Head - just past the sign that will tell you turn left to go up to Diamond Head, continue/bear right. In-between gorgeous houses you will see small beach access signs. Look for house with blue roof & walk onto beach. You'll see amazing fish! Bring snorkels. Halona Blow Hole Beach - down from the spectator area is a beach area you need to hike down to. I highly suggest going down. A *big* turtle was in the water there just flipping in the surf with us. Great drop-offs for the kids to jump into. Also a lava tube to walk thru if you're brave! Pali Highway - drive it to be amazed! Hanauma Bay - W-O-W...... should be one of the 7 wonders of the World. Bring underwater camera & snorkels (or rent) - we bought ours early on from WalMart there in Waikiki. There are ice cream shops along the way that serve Bubble Drinks. Try one! Huge tapioca beads within smoothies. Kids had a blast sucking on them. Hailewa Town - there are so many beaches tucked into there. Just amazing expanse of lava & sand & turquoise water. Stop at a Shrimp truck there - soooo garlicy! You'll drive thru the Dole Plantation to get there - stop there for some pineapple ice. We NEVER made it there when it was open ![]() Lanikai Beach - you can rent a kayak & paddle 45min off to the island in the distance. We didn't but I can tell you the beach was amazing. Best advice - ask the waiter where he would go to the beach & write down directions. That's how we found soooo many amazing spots. Pack lightly when traveling to the beach. Bring just the essentials & leave rest in car. Lock car & don't take valuables to "touristy" beach. Everything is more expensive there. Be prepared. A gallon of milk for the room fridge was over $10. But with a little forethought you can still have great meals. Many Food Stores in Waikiki sell prepared meals that were pretty damn good & a heck of a lot cheaper than a restaurant. I'd rather eat on the beach anyway

THERE IS NO PUBLIC PARKING AVAILABLE IN WAIKIKI AREA..... HOTEL : I recommend any hotel with easy access to beach in Waikiki area so you can go to beach anytime you want...... 1-2 block from beach wont be an issue....but don't book hotel too far away from beach.......... ATTRACTIONS: 1) Pearl Harbor 2) Dole Plantation 3) Manoa Falls <<<< Dont forget bugs spray 4) Hanauma Bay Snorkeling 5) Diamond head : Last entry at 4:30 pm, would be difficult with Kids in the heat of afternoon. 6) Polynesian Cultural Center <<<<<<<< Don't miss the evening show..... 7)Paradise Cove <<<< Same as Polynesian Cultural center can choose anyone 9) Atlantis submarine ride <<<<<Don't go for the big one there is not much difference 10) Drive around the Island, its beautiful.... 11) Endless ACTIVITIES depending on budget like Para sailing, dolphin cruse, dinner cruse ....... Take a look at this http://www.to-hawaii.com/oahu/attractions/ SCENIC POINT : Get the Polynesian Cultural center brochure from the hotel lobby visitor center.... It has a map with all the Attraction and scenic points around the island........that's a very useful and simple map..... You can divide your trip in 2 parts...... 1) north half and 2) south half SNORKELING : If you wnna go for Snorkeling at Hanauma bay go early in the morning before 9am....or else you wont get parking...... |

I would bypass Hanauma Bay. It's just a huge tourist trap where they make you pay, watch a video, and wait around for an hour before you can even get down to the beach. Once you make it to the beach, the life gaurds yell at you constantly and it's hugely over crowded.
The coral's all dead there anyway from people walking on it. I saw more fish/turtles elsewhere, like up on the north shore at the turtle shore resort. I'll never go back to Hanauma bay... |
