To all who served – a simple thank you is never enough. We would not be able to post these deals if it were not for your service.

Two notes before jumping in:

Proof of Military Service. First, most companies require some form of military ID – including a U.S. Uniform Services ID Card (active/reserve/retired), Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), Photograph in uniform, be wearing uniform (if your service permits), Veterans Organization Card (e.g., American Legion and VFW), DD214, discharge paperwork, or other form of identification. Other restaurants and companies may only require a photo of you in uniform, or go by the honor system.

Participation. Second, always call ahead to verify locations, times, and participation. Many of the listed companies are franchises and may have different policies. We will do our best to keep this page updated as we find new info.

This year, Veterans Day falls on Friday, November 11, 2011 so expect a long weekend of deals and bargains lasting through Monday the 14th at outlet malls, department stores and local retailers nationwide.

Armistice Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day, the purpose for these days seem to confuse many Americans. Armistice Day and Veterans Day are essentially the same. Armistice Day became a legal holiday in 1938 to honor the end of World War I and the men and women who served. However, in 1954 after World War II and the Korean War Congress changed the original wording in the legislation from “Armistice” to “Veterans.” Therefore, November 11 officially became known as “Veterans Day.”

In 1968, Congress, in an effort to give federal employees an extra 3-day weekend, changed Veterans Day to the last Monday in October. Many veterans’ organizations did not like this and in 1975 Veterans Day was returned to November 11.

What is the distinction between Veterans Day and Memorial Day? Memorial Day is to honor veterans who died in service to their country either during battle or as a result of injuries that occurred during battle. Although deceased veterans are remembered on Veterans Day, it is primarily to honor living veterans.

Here are some additional facts about Veterans Day. In other countries, Veterans Day is called Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. The song, “God Bless America” was first sung by Kate Smith in 1938 on Veterans Day at the New York World’s Fair. The Veterans Administration motto, “to care for him (any veteran) who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and orphan” is a quote from President Abraham Lincoln. There were 48 stars on the American flag when Veterans Day become a national holiday. (Beckett, 2009)

A quote from my Daddy sums it quite well, “A debt of eternal gratitude is owed to veterans, past, present and future by we the citizens of this great country and thus we honor you on this Veterans Day.” – Lawrence Tillmon

Sport Clips – I cannot confirm free haircut for veterans. Most other sites (except the mn link above) quote this promotion word for word:

Sport Clips is the official haircutter of the VFW and will donate $1 from every haircut during the National Cut-a-Thon to VFW’s Operation, which provides free phone time to active-duty military personnel and hospitalized veterans. Sports Clips stores also offer a offer a Heroes discount which includes active and retired military. No mention of a free haircut or veteran discount.
Chili’s – Veterans Eat Free on Veterans Day, 11am – 5pm.

Hooters – 10 Free Wings for Veterans and active military.

Texas Roadhouse – Free Lunch and Beverage, 11am – 2pm.

Olive Garden – Free entree for Veterans and active military.

Reminds me of last year when I heard the waitresses (at Applebees I think) complaining about doing the free eats promo because they got "bad" tips and had to serve a bunch of people. Luckily for them, I walked out because I'd rather go somewhere to pay for my meal than wait an hour to be seated only to know that they are pissed off because they have to serve veterans for one day out of the year.

Anyways, to digress. Thanks for the thread.

Great post. I have one suggestion though. I think the thread will more readily get the attention of the target audience if it says something like "for active military / veterans" in the title.
