hmm do you guys think there will be better deals on bf or should i just jump on this? Also I see a power symbol on the back, do you need to turn it on before using or just automatic turn on when it is connected to a usb port? sorry for sounding like a noob, I'm a passport guy currently with a 400gb and a 1tb. Never owned a my book before and just wondering how it works and want something bigger than 1tb. Thanks

There should be a better deal for this item sometime in the near future, even if it doesn't pop up during Black Friday. If you can wait until the end of this year, I'm almost positive you'll get a better deal.

All external hard drives labeled as "desktop" or are not labeled as "portable" require an external power source (i.e. you need to connect them to a wall outlet and just the USB port alone will not be enough).

I purchased the 2TB version of this model about two months ago and after reading the reviews, I didn't dare open it! I finally sold it on ebay and made some money in the process.

Interesting point, looks like the My Book Essential isn't up to normal Western Digital quality. The deal it itself is pretty awesome though, unless you are one of those people who are anti e-junkie.

Actually, with the jump in HDD prices due to the Thai flooding, this IS a very good deal.

But what concerns me is how often the Caviar Green drives park and unpark their heads. If you use this occassionally as an external, that might not be an issue, but if you use this as a system drive then this could be an issue.

I have WD internal drives that have worked flawlessly for years. I am not anti WD. But I do read reviews and do my homework before purchasing computer components.

When excellent ratings show up at less than 35% [as is the case with this drive], then that is a red flag for me and I do my best to stay away.

And I agree, if this drive works well, it is an excellent deal...but for me, it simply is not worth the risk.

My other concern is with Staples. I question whether or not they are posting selective positive reviews that are not in accordance with the overall consensus of the general population...

Amazon's reviews look better than NE, but I still see a lot of problems with this specific unit:
