Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 DVD & Blu-Ray [PRICES UPDATED AGAIN 11.13.11] – best prices, special features and compilation list of retailer exclusives & deals!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 was released in theaters on July 15th, 2011 in 2D & 3D. It earned over $380 million dollars domestically and over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the 13th highest grossing movie ever domestically and the 3rd highest grossing movie worldwide. It is also the highest grossing movie of 2011. Basically, the movie and the franchise made a ton of money.
That would explain why Warner Brothers CEO Barry Meyer was kind enough to give JK Rowling a white gold antique diamond bracelet valued at millions of dollars at the after-party of the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in London.
The movie represents the conclusion of the eight-film journey wrapping up the adaptations of all seven books. It ties up all the loose ends and character arcs, pays off on a long-standing romantic attraction between two characters in particular, kills off many, many characters, and as promised, it features non-stop action, the Battle of Hogwarts and the final confrontation between Harry Potter and Voldemort.
It should be noted that, much like Disney’s business model for their animated movie releases, Warner Bros. will put a moratorium on all DVDs and Blu-rays of the eight Potter films beginning December 29th. The studio announced that new shipments will cease on this date and the films will remain vaulted for an undisclosed amount of time. It will be interesting to see how long Warner Bros. will stick to this commitment especially since Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 are the only movies left that haven’t received the Ultimate Edition treatment yet. But this movie and the eight movie box set will be available throughout the entire holiday shopping season, and this thread will showcase all the different versions and exclusives.
Don’t panic, though. According to this, “there could be a sense of urgency from the consumers’ perspective, [but] there will be Potter product come the first of the year,” says Jeff Baker, senior VP and general manager of Warner Bros.’ Theatrical Catalog. “But over time, they’ll be less and less of that inventory… there is discussion internally about aggregating assets from all of these films over the last decade and adding some new things — we’ve never done an Ultimate Edition on the final two films — and doing some grand kind of piece,” says Baker. “It could be the end of 2012 or the beginning of ’13.” For the full article: http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/10/27/harry-potter-moratorium/ .

A note about the digital copy for download, it is called an “UltraViolet Digital Copy”. This is different than your usual “digital copy for download”, this is a relatively new technology where you "buy-once, play-anywhere". Users sign up for a Household Account, in which six members of your family can access UltraViolet content from the cloud, whether they're physically in your home, on the road, or living as a student in another city. In total, UltraViolet content can also be registered to a PC as well as 11 other "devices"—namely, game consoles, PCs, smartphones, tablets, plus media player software or other apps.
It allows consumers the freedom and choice to take a TV show or movie that they've purchased and play it back on a variety of devices. What UltraViolet hopes to do, eventually, is to allow users to do what they want with their movies, regardless of where they've purchased them. In other words, UltraViolet treats a digital copy of a movie like a physical DVD—you should be able to plug it in to whatever device you'd like, provided it's compatible.
The medium by which WB's UltraViolet content will come to various devices is Flixster, the site that WB acquired in May of this year. Flixster has already developed apps for iOS devices, Android, and BlackBerry, so users can assume that they'll be able to view Warner movies on those platforms.
I excerpted this stuff from this article from Sept. 2011, and it has a good analysis of the technology. For the full article, go here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2392250,00.asp#fbid=O2caKYQCWf8 .

Best Prices:
I did a price comparison on both the internet and this week’s circulars with Amazon.com, Best Buy, Bestbuy.com, Barnesandnoble.com, Buy.com, Costco.com (no listings for some reason), DeepDiscountDVD.com, Frys.com (no listings found), FYE, FYE.com, Kmart.com/Sears.com, Overstock.com, Target, Target.com, Toys R Us, ToysRUs.com (no listings found) and Wal-mart.com. Unless otherwise noted or known by me, the prices are the same in store and online at their respective websites. I noted shipping in the price rankings because of the competition between stores, but I will only be comparing base prices of the movie. Shipping costs will not factor into the price rankings as a result.
Please note that with these price rankings, these prices are as current as I am aware of. Wal-mart's in-store prices don't always match its website prices, for example. As a result, these prices are as accurate as I can verify from the internet and flyers from the newspaper, I don't put prices in the rankings that I cannot verify.
For example, Costco & Toys R Us will presumably sell this movie, but there are no listings for it online nor in this week’s circular, so there is no price to rank. I also know from experience that FYE's B&M store prices are the same as those on their website, so I made one listing for both. In other words, these stores reserve the right to change their prices and I might not know about it.
That's where the SD community can help each other out and if new or different prices are verified, I will edit my post accordingly.
Here are the conclusions:

A word about these prices: when a movie is released on a Friday, like X-Men: First Class and Transformers: Dark of the Moon were, I noticed that a lot of the prices that were from Friday to Saturday were also the same through the entirety of the whole entire week after that. So, some of these prices might remain the same even going into the week after the movie is released onto DVD and Blu-Ray.

I included as much pertinent information on this new release that I could find so everyone can make a more educated decision on whether to purchase this movie or not, as well as which edition.
And that is the end of this compilation, my fourth New Release Thread for the year 2011. It was a absolute doozy to write up.
Remember, don’t try to fight Voldemort’s followers on your own, bring every friend you’ve got, you’ll need them to fight the bad buys to the bitter end (and many of them won’t survive the fight
). Do this and you will survive to make it to the climactic final confrontation with Voldemort. Will you survive the duel with the Dark Lord, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?
For more information on my New Release Threads for blockbuster DVD and Blu-Ray releases, please click here: hhttp://slickdeals.net/forums/sdsearch.php?mode=forum&searchuserid=410841&showposts=0&starteronly=1.
UPDATE 1 - 11/9/11 @ 7:44 pm: Changed DeepDiscountDVD.com's price ranking to reflect their new, increased price. Thanks to Ima2000 for pointing this one out! Also changed FYE's price for the BR/DVD Combo pack to reflect the correct price, though the ranking remains the same. Thanks to TheBlueGoose for pointing out that price change as well! I repped you both!
UPDATE 2 - 11/11/11 @ 8:24 am: I checked to see if any prices changed, and sure enough, they did. I updated the price rankings accordingly. Some major changes and some minor ones:
1.) According to their website, FYE/FYE.com changed their $5 rebate - it is now only be effective for the Blu-Ray only and BR/DVD Combo pack editions - it is NOT applicable to the DVD now.
This removed the DVD from the best price ranking in the DVD category, moving Walmart.com to the number one best price and revising most of the other rankings upward.
2.) Buy.com slightly raised their prices for both the DVD and the BR/DVD Combo pack - moving them downward into the bottom two worst prices in the rankings.
3.) DeepDiscountDVD.com slightly lowered the price of their BR/DVD Combo pack, moving them up in the rankings one notch.
4.) Frys.com has added listings for this release (there were no listings three days ago) and I added them into the rankings in all three categories - their prices were competitive in the DVD and BR/DVD Combo pack categories, so they placed in the upper third of their respective rankings.
5.) Overstock.com slightly raised their price for the DVD upward, moving them slightly downward in the rankings.
6.) Walmart.com is currently, as of this writing, out of stock of their exclusive Two-Disc Special Edition DVD.
I'm sure it will come back in stock pretty soon, so keep checking back there. It will also be in the store, so you might want to go there if you don't want to wait for it to come back into stock.
Finally, I will update the prices once more on Sunday, 11/13/11 so that the rankings are good for the next week as well.
UPDATE 3 - 11/11/11 @ 4:50 pm: Added Toys R Us and ToysRUs.com prices to the rankings. Please note only the DVD is available on their website, not the BR/DVD Combo pack. The prices came from today's newspaper flyer.
UPDATE 4 - 11/12/11 @ 7:17 am: Walmart.com is currently, as of this writing, BACK in stock of their exclusive Two-Disc Special Edition DVD on their website.
UPDATE 5 - 11/14/11 @ 9:05 am: Prices changed a little for some places today, but mostly stayed the same, as I suspected. I adjusted the rankings accordingly. Some minor changes:
1.) Best Buy/BestBuy.com raised the prices on their BR/DVD Combo pack, and on the exclusive 3D Combo pack as well.
2.) BarnesandNoble.com raised their prices slightly.
3.) FYE/FYE.com lowered the price of the DVD to become the first, BEST price in those rankings.
4.) Kmart slightly raised the price of the BR/DVD Combo pack.
5.) The price of Target/Target.com's exclusive BR/DVD four disc Combo pack slightly increased.
