Site Changes and Revision History Log

This log will be used to inform users of upcoming changes as well as document past changes to the site.

Upcoming Changes

• Deals you may have missed - The frontpage is getting a little bit of a redesign. Rather than showing the past 3 days worth of frontpage deals in its entirety, we're going to make a mix of deals. Today's Deals and "Deals you may have missed" which will include yesterday's FP deals, and older fp deals that are not yet expired. This means that deals that are still alive have a better chance of being seen.
• Bought This and Report as Expired - A new "I bought this" button is being introduced which will automatically add the deal to a private user list, as well as rep the op, and vote up the thread. A new Report as Expired button will allow the community to easily report a deal as expired, and will also show users how many others have reported it. These reports will get sent to a moderator for review and should allow us to more easily and accurately mark a thread as expired.
• Permadeal pages are being deprecated, Deal Threads will have a new updated first post style - Instead of having two different pages/ways to view a deal, we are now removing the permadeal pages and linking only to the thread. As a result, the thread design for the original poster will get refreshed - easier to view titles, a images/thumbnail viewer, attachment list, and related deals.
• Facebook and Google Accounts Integration - Users will now be able to register with, or link their existing accounts to their Facebook or Google accounts for easy sign on. Additional benefits from this will allow users to easily and automatically post content to facebook if linked (such as sharing whether or not you Bought an item or Thumbed up a deal, or created a new deal thread).
• Following Users - This new feature allows you to subscribe to a user, and get notifications whenever they post a new thread.
• Post Rating System - This will allow users to vote on individual posts (comments) as well as the entire thread. This can extend to allow us to find a summary of "the most helpful posts" in a thread, as well as automatically collapse or hide non-helpful or negative posts.
• Community Deal Data - Rather than make it the sole responsibility of the OP, we will now let the community help refine additional details to a deal such as price, coupons, rebates, categories, tags, etc which should help provide better search results (and the ability to filter by price). This will be a part of the Community Wiki.
• Deal Alerts System Upgrade - The Deal Alerts/Notifications system is seeing a complete overhaul. Planned changes include:
  • SMS Notification Support
  • HTML Emails with rich content and images.
  • The ability to further refine deal alert settings via the same filtering system as Search (categories, tags, users, forums, etc)
  • The ability to add a deal alert from search results.
  • The ability to preview deal alert results.

• 2012-08-22 Facebook/Google Integration, Following, and Easy Registration - We have now integrated with Facebook and Google to make signon even easier with a one-click process. You can also now share your actions on facebook with your friends to help them save money too. You can also now Follow a user to get notified when they post new deals. Privacy settings have been included for all of these new features. Easy registration means unregistered users can easily register and link their accounts.
• 2012-03-14 Enhanced Frontpage Preference - Allow users to specify preferences for the frontpage to help them customize what appears and doesnt appear on the frontpage.
• 2012-02-09 Subscribed Threads Improvements - Per user feedback, we are working on improving the new subscribed threads functionality.
• 2012-02-09 Show Bold (Unread) / Unbold (Read) for Popular Deals, Trending Topics, and Subscribed Threads
• 2011-12-15 URL Rewrites Seo friendly links
• 2011-11-30 New Bonus Entries When you get FP Deals, Popular Deals, and signing up for the newsletter.
• 2011-11-22 Bold unread popular deals Like the forums, unread popular deals will be bolded in popular deals. Read (or if unread after a while) will become unbolded.
• 2011-11-20 Bonus Entries for Time Spent on Giveaways increased to 1 bonus entry per 5 days spent, up to a maximum of 30. (Previously it was 1 per 7 days, maximum of 15)
• 2011-11-16 New Black Friday Section Released: "Editor's Picks"
• 2011-11-15 Deals Tab on main menu lose dropdown. Also added nav bar to Black Friday pages.
• 2011-11-10 Albums and Social Groups have been officially deprecated and discontinued. Please continue your discussions in the regular forum.
• 2011-11-09 Expired Deals on Frontpage now collapsed/condensed into one entry. In order to clean up the clutter on the frontpage, expired deals are now compacted into one entry that reads "+5 More Expired Deals". Click on this to view the expired deals. This is the new default setting and can be changed to the old format by toggling the "Hide Expired" button.
• 2011-11-03 New Profile Privacy Settings and Display Fixes. By request, additional profile privacy settings have been added to control a user's activity stream content. Various font-size and color changes have been applied to the user's account pages.
• 2011-11-03 Midnight Theme is Deprecated. The theme will still exist, however official support is ending. Our developers or volunteers will work on it whenever they get the chance.
• 2011-11-02 Black Friday Section Activated. The 2011 Black Friday section is now active and public.
  • New this year: Black Friday Predictions and Black Friday Editor's Guide/Picks
• 2011-11-02 Login box and registration form updated.
• 2011-11-02 Mobile Application Pages Released, Slickdeals iPad App Announced.
• 2011-11-02 Bonus Entries for User Referrals added to Giveaways
• 2011-11-02 Sections renamed:
  • Hot Topics renamed to "Popular Deals"
  • Up and Coming Topics renamed to "Trending Deals"
  • Tools, Info, and Blog tabs on the main menu have been condensed into one tab.
• 2011-11-02 New Features and Changes to UserCP
  
  • The former "User Control" panel has been redesigned. This includes all pages in the old "UserCP" such as profile pages, friends, reputation, private messages, subscribed threads, etc.
  • Profile Pictures have been removed, please use Avatars instead.
  • The Private Message limit for fully registered accounts has been increased to 5000.
  • The UserCP Link has been removed and replaced with two links: "Notifications and Activity" and "My Subscriptions".
  • The "My Account" tab has been updated to reflect the new changes and sections.
• 2011-10-20 Attachments style update.

2012-01-18
Significant improvements to wiki edit/save speed, especially noticeable on large wikis.
More improvements are coming soon too, this is the initial performance fixes.

Great job, bryantq! I really like that it has the upcoming changes, so that we'll be forewarned and not so surprised when they come, in addition to those that have already occurred.

It's a great feature, really, and I know it was the subject of some request some time ago. For me for now though I'd prefer the old format so I am choosing not to hide expired deals, however they are still hidden unless the button is actuated in the tab I am viewing. Maybe that is intended?

For example try this to reproduce (in any version of Firefox). Clear cookies for slickdeals.net/slickdealz.net and open a new tab and go to slickdeals.net. The hide expired button is pressed in by default. If you toggle the button it will show the expired deals. Now, open another tab and goto slickdeals.net again. Notice the button is no longer pressed in however the expired deals are still hidden. Clicking the button again will press it and nothing will happen (as expected as the deals are already hidden). Then click it again and it will show expired deals. It needs to be done each time.

Also look at my screenshot. The expired deals don't show right in simple mode. My screenshot is zoomed in but it's the same situation with default zoom

*like* b/c that menu was always accidentally dropping down over *my user cp* button. but that is usually not a problem anymore b/c i'm now using the *my subscription* button which is further over to the right and half the buttons are now staggered on the second menu bar so you are not accidentally pulling menus down over the left side buttons you really want and covering them.

less dropdowns over other buttons the better. maybe those bars could be switched so the dropdowns never obsure the other buttons.

Don't mean to be stoopid but I always chose the send-to-last selection on the dropdown and I really don't recall what the selection was named.

Can someone remind me what the dropdown selections were?
