![]() Seriously though, if I need to find something I go to the appropriate forum and start my search there. I hardly ever run a search from the front page. |

for instance, say i'm looking for the shoprite thread. it comes up as the last selection if i put *in thread titles only* even though it's the most popular thread and has the latest post and the other threads are old. http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.p...itleonly=1 so many times people come into the target deals thread looking for other threads like the trading thread or the kmart thread b/c they just cannot find them. just recently i was looking for the wkly cvs thread and when you search cvs all this other stupid crap comes up. i do better by just scanning the thread titles in the forum listing. i will find it w/in the first 2 pages b/c people post more often in that thread than the threads that come up in search. SD Update FYI's-

this would also work for the wkly drugstore threads like cvs, wags and rite aid. the most active thread is usually the one you are looking for. that would be the current wk b/c everyone is busy reporting if a deal worked or not, if they got shot down, the cashier refused their coupons, some smash and grabber cleared the shelves, blah, blah, blah. the threads for future wks and past wks would not be as active most of the time b/c the deal hasn't happened yet or the deals are expired. and in hot deals too. i wanna see the *hot* deals, not expired deals. the ones where the joint is jumping. you are looking for action. not inaction. those 6 other shoprite threads had no activity for a long time compared to the oldest thread. |

i first started out in hot deals and i would religiously check the first 40 threads for a couple yrs. a hot thread is an active thread and that's what i would be looking for. (then i figured out that those hot deals for toothpaste, razors, toys, games etc. are actually much, much hotter in the drugstore forum. how can you beat 90% off to free to MM?) for instance, lets just search *staples* b/c staples for some unknown reason does not have a dedicated drugstore forum thread and until a couple yrs ago i would go to fatwallet for staples deals. every staples deal has it's own thread in hot deals. since it's bts (back to school) staples is known to have hot deals in july and august and i need a new computer and i'm shopping for bts deals. (now it behooves me to go back to the site issues and suggestions thread and read up on how to do screen shots. ah well. for next time.) why does the blue crappy thread w/ a -1 rating whose last post was 8/1 come up b4 the red thread below whose rating is a +12 last post was an hr ago? why did 3 threads w/ crappy ratings and last posts a day ago come b4 the green thread of bts deals w/ a +30 rating that was last posted in 5 hrs ago????? it is not just me that feels that search cannot find what we want. Searching by rating would also greatly favor old deals, not new ones, obscuring every single thread that's posted and upcoming but hasn't beaten every old deal.
Thread post date is the best default overall because older deals are frequently dead. Any other default ends up with a lot of older dead deals coming up above new, active deals, which is bad ![]() If you wish to find recent activity or highest rating, you can still do that, but they don't make sense as a default. When search first rolled out we actually had it on last reply, and people could never find what they were looking for (including us) - after switching it to thread post date, it got a lot better. |

this is the 2nd thread that comes up when you search thread titles only for *printable*. in this thread many regulars couldn't even find the thread when it got retired. http://slickdeals.net/f/3300100-W...pon-Thread |

![]() Another thing you can try, if you don't want to sticky all the weekly threads, is you can create your own custom search and save that search. For example, for your Shoprite search: Go to Advanced search, use Shoprite in title only, select the Drugstore forum, and at the bottom set the 'sort by' to Last Post Date. Then search. This is the result for that search. Or for the Printable Manufacturer coupon thread, same thing: (I excluded the word retired from the search, using -retired, so that the old threads don't show up): Results If the results of your search have what you need, then you can choose to save that specific search. To do so, once you see the results, then at the top right of the search results page, you'll see a 'Save this search' link. Click it. Name the search whatever you want, then click on the 'ok' button. You can then access that saved search anytime, either from the dropdown menu when hovering over the My Account link (see Saved Searches near the bottom), or from your account page itself, on the left hand side, near the bottom under the My Lists area with the subscribed threads, etc. |

honestly, that's way too much work to run a search for say the wkly cvs thread that i may want to look at maybe 5x/yr. i've been here long enough to know that the threads i am looking for will normally be w/in the first 2 pages of the forum. normally, it's just easier to scan all the threads on the first 2 pages than try to run a search and than refine your search. this person in the *can't find the printable* thread said said the same thing-
to figure out you need to run an advance search b/c your basic search pulled up hundreds of the wrong threads and then run another search excluding words like *retired* takes too much time. it's just easier to ask somebody to link the thread you want for you. but i'm not the only person who does this. many people have to resort to asking b/c their searches are fruitless. |
|||
|
Searches are only fruitless if you ignore the options available to you.
"printable", drug store forum only, titles only, sorted by last post same options, but "Kmart" this time You cannot just type a word and expect it to magically sort right every time - you have to change options to find older threads. |

Bought This and Report as Expired - A new "I bought this" button is being introduced which will automatically add the deal to a private user list, as well as rep the op, and vote up the thread. A new Report as Expired button will allow the community to easily report a deal as expired, and will also show users how many others have reported it. These reports will get sent to a moderator for review and should allow us to more easily and accurately mark a thread as expired.

the expired button. i just hope you don't put it in the drugstore forum. that could cause a lot of problems. probably works best for online deals anyway. i very rarely rep people anymore b/c it's too much work to check if they've privatized their public stream so i won't be clicking on the *bought this* button either. |
