Just got an Email from Apple--a big surprise since I haven't purchased any apple product since 05. It turns out that there might be a defect in the battery where it could overheat and catch on fire. You can send it in for a replacement--not sure what kind of Generation you'll get though, but you might get something better? First gen was 2gb and 4gb. I think the minimum hdd storage for the current iPod nanos is now 8gb?

Link is here:

Attached below is the email I got:

Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Replacement Process

You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Additional Information

Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back.

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

Thank you for participating in this program.

Sincerely,

Apple

The 1st generation Ipods are selling for a lot more than the 6th generation ones on ebay XD XD XD.
I'll just keep mine until the 12th generation comes out, then they'll be worth the same as the 1st gen now. Problem?

What are you talking about? Why did you say "Problem"?

OP - Thank you for posting this.

The hardest part of the process was to find my 1st gen Ipod.
Once I did, the entire process took 5 minutes of my time and maybe 2 weeks total.
The replacement has been shipped to me and I should be getting it this week.

Thank you again SD! Stoked!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if you wait to ship for a few more months, that you will receive the new Nano?

I'm hoping so too. Not too keen on the 6th gen nano.

The new nano looks great - I'd rather wait for that one, but I doubt that they would ship it since they probably need to clear out their inventory of 6th gens anyway.

So I bought a iPod nano, thinking it was the 1st generation - and it's actually the 2nd. Not for much though. Do I just use it - or do I try to send it in? (Some posts here said they did get a replacement on the 2nd generation.)

it does not.
and its going to be a long wait since they are always going to ship the 6th gen as replacement until that is discontinued, which probably wouldn't happen until the about end of 2013

Anyone experiencing slowness with the return process lately? I setup a replacement request on OCT. 11th and the repair status is still on step 1 "service requested".
