Just got an Email from Apple--a big surprise since I haven't purchased any apple product since 05. It turns out that there might be a defect in the battery where it could overheat and catch on fire. You can send it in for a replacement--not sure what kind of Generation you'll get though, but you might get something better? First gen was 2gb and 4gb. I think the minimum hdd storage for the current iPod nanos is now 8gb?

Link is here:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod...eplacement

Attached below is the email I got:

Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Replacement Process

You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Additional Information

Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back.

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

Thank you for participating in this program.

Sincerely,

Apple

Once you get your shipping notification of the replacement iPod nano, you can easily find out its generation, capacity, and its color at http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenser...model.html (More information in this post, and the person to rep)

Note: The previous page does not seem to work now. Try this link instead (just enter the last four characters of the new serial number:

What Will You Ship The Nano In

1 of 3 things provided by Apple after you make your replacement claim

1. A box with 2 pieces of foam where you put the nano in ...

2. A yellow bubble mailer

3. A box with 2 pieces of protective cardboard as seen in the posters pictures below.
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=46311512&postcount=1050

What Will You Get In Return ??

Although its not fully confirmed and many apple reps have said that the 1st gen nanos will be getting a battery replacement. This is more likely what you will be getting.

6th Generation Nano, Silver, 8GB.

It will be shipped in a box protected with foam in a pink plastic zip bag.

You will be shipped the Ipod Nano alone. No Headphones, No Sync Cable

Some have reported problems with the Replacement nanos

My advice first and foremost is to take your nano to an Apple Store with Warranty in hand (warranty came in the box that your new nano came in) and tell them the issue as well as show them the warranty apple has been known to swap out broken current gen devices with no problem ... but as always YMMV.

if that doesnt work call up apple or file another claim for the current nano

Thanks! I have an iPod Nano - the only music player I have and only Apple product I own - and still use it at least four days a week. A replacement would be awesome!

Mine is 7K5 on a 2GB version, paid like $200 for it too from what I remember. I got from my brother as Christmas gift for both my sister and I because during that time was the hardest time financially for our family. And I was still in lower grade school, adolescent times with no manners, and kept asking and asking for one. I feel ashamed for what I did back then, but thankfully we are better off now, and I have learned many lessons to be who I am today.

Thanks alot, my nano ipod speakers can be barely heard, so this is big help.
The first gen nano doesn't have speakers. It only makes audible clicks.
