My wife's HP laptop died just last week. I'm replacing it with a Dell. The HP laptop damn near caught on fire.

If I could build my own laptop like I do desktops, I would never buy another manufacturer's laptop. Most are just crap after 18 months.

Anyone else think laptops are overpriced? IMO, you should be able to get an i5 with a good screen, bluetooth, a 7200 rpm HD, a half decent GPU, in a case that does not look as fragile as an eggshell for $450.

Laptops are the lowest they have ever been. I am regularly shocked by how much one gets paying so little. On the other hand, the tiny margins made selling these laptops and the intense competition leads to cheaper and cheaper build quality.

Its a customizable laptop, there are high end graphics options.
Cut out some other options, and choose the graphics.

Edit: Just checked, they don't have the 6800 series anymore. Only the 6770, kinda weak if you want to do hardcore gaming on it. Otherwise quite good.

I read this often and the answer to that is very simple: Intel's CPUs cost a lot of $$$ and all the other suppliers in the chain also want to make a profit. And if you want a half-decent GPU, add at least $100-150 to that. GPUs on laptops are much slower than on the desktop due to power (TDP) and heat dissipation constraints. Also, the companies making GPU want to make a profit too.

The cheapest i5 processor in 1000 unit quantities is $225 USD.

Now imagine, adding a screen, mechanical hard drives (that now have increased in price 2-3x due to flooding in Thailand), chassis costs, and motherboard, memory, etc., and warranty and customer service costs, plus the factory costs to build this laptop and you'll make $0 selling a laptop for $450.

The particular i7-2670QM CPU by itself costs $378 [intel.com].

It's 4 cores + hyper threading and turbos to 3.1ghz. Unless you play videogames (which is better for a desktop or console anyway), then all this laptop would need is an SSD. I have a 17 inch 3.5-year-old HP laptop with a Core 2 Duo T5800 and a BluRay Drive, with Intel crappy graphics (Intel 4500 or something). It still plays 1080P content without problems and plays Blu-Ray from RedBox through HDMI on my plasma TV. I added an SSD for snappiness. It's not that bad, other than Flash really kills the CPUs performance with more than 15 tabs open in Firefox. But with any of the new CPUs starting with Core i3, this won't be a problem. I really don't see any laptop becoming obsolete for at least 4 years nowdays if you have an SSD in it.

Like I said, if you want to play games, you should be building a desktop in the first place. Even the best AMD card on the laptop is only as fast as a $130 HD6850 on the desktop...
