this is a great deal, bought mine at $132 and I thought it was good deal.

This is a very good deal. I bought this for ~ 132 last year in Best buy.

Reasonably decent deal. I bought the S570 last year (Dec.) for $119, and I thought that was a good deal then. Slickdeal? No, but good deal? Yes. Same applies here. S580 is either this years model number, or a slight upgrade to my model, too lazy to dig deeper. But with the usual trend of electronics slowly coming down in price once they hit market, makes this deal decent, just not slick ... IMO.

I like the Sony XMB user interface ... either you like it or hate it. My player is finicky with 4x burned DVD-R media. It "hangs" sometimes and you have to reset the disc and go back to chapter you were watching, sometimes you can't even do that. Very strange and sporadic. If I could nail down the cause, I'd fix it. But, I pass these discs along to family and friends and NONE have ever complained that my discs freeze up on them. So I don't think it's the burn.

Have you tried different media? Sony optical drives, in my opinion, are notorious when it comes to readability of certain recordable media. I've found this to be true for all Sony optical drives I've purchased since the late 80's. I've had the best luck using Sony media most recently. My BDP-N460 plays the Sony 16x DVD-Rs flawlessly (burned at 4x).
