Looked (briefly) this evening at my brothers VIZIO 32" Class 1080p (not sure which model in particular, & to me at least) it appeared to have ghosting of text characters? Either he did not see it or was not bothered by it, or had adjusted to it.
He had left the screen at 1920x1080 but had bumped the text size to 125%.
He uses a laptop attached to a "dock" as his computer & noted that when he removes the laptop from the dock, then returns it, on attaching, the screen resolution changes (to something less then 1920x1080) & the only way to get it back to that is to reboot the computer?
After the 1920x1080 setting the next lower resolution was ... (something around) 1280x... (from what I recall). IOW, it was not like there were a whole range of settings to choose from. The 1280x... & things were quite "big". The 1920x1080 with text size set back to 100% was acceptable to me.
In addition to what the monitor can display, some available (or not) resolutions may depend on your particular video card (& driver).
No gaming, so can't comment there.
That said, I'm likely to pick up one of the ~$199.99 32" TVs that abound at the moment, but that will most likely be a 720p set, so my resolution may be limited to 1366x768 or less. Hopefully I will find that acceptable.
I'm kind of leaning to a Sansui from BJs as #1, I can return it if I don't like it, #2, they have a local service agent (so if it breaks within the 1-year warranty I don't have to send it back to CA or something like that), #3, it has QAM built in (though that probably shouldn't matter to me as I don't intend to use it as a TV).
Otherwise Amazon has a 30-day return policy where they pick up the return freight (at least on some of their sets). So if it is DOA or dies within the 30-days, at least during that period, I can send it back & not be stuck with paying freight.
(Bestbuy, in store only - if they still have them, had their Dynex brand at the same price, & that could be an option too.)
If you are going for a gaming monitor, I would probably suggest a monitor that has a 2ms refresh time and 120 hz. The PLANAR SA2311W is $299 and has both. Check the video. Alot of good reviews. The 6 Newegg reviews rate it at 5 eggs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyIZERR-pqg
Im also in the process of shopping and am considering a S27A950 or the 23" version. They are alot more expensive only because it comes with 3d glasses. Picture on it is AMAZING compared to all the other monitors. I was able to see one tonight.
