DirecTV. Is it possible to get deals offered to NEW customers if you are an EXISTING customer?

wrxrob 39 November 25, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Here's our situation. The person I know has had DirecTV standard definition for over 10 years. They recently purchased a 3D HDTV, and would like to upgrade to DirecTV HD. Numerous ads are showing free HD boxes, and some even free HD DVR boxes. However, all of these deals are for NEW customers only.

If this person is an EXISTING customer, is there a way to persuade DirecTV to give out the deals offered to new customers only?

Is it like the cable companies where you have to threaten to cancel and join the competitor (i.e. Dish network), or do satellite companies not work like that?

I was in the same boat. I was out of contract, and saw all the cool stuff that new customers get. I had only one HD receiver and one SD receiver in my house. I tried getting the new customer deals and they wouldn't budge, so I canceled. A few hours later I get a call back from Customer Retention. They wanted me to come back, so they offered the following:

Free HD DVR Receiver
Two free HD Receivers
Free whole-home DVR installation
$15 bill credit for 1 yr
Free HD access for 2 years
Free DVR service for 3 months
Free Starz and Showtime for 1yr
Free NFL Sunday ticket for 1 yr

Needless to say I came back. Tech is coming this weekend to install Smilie

Yep, just cancel - they will call you back shortly from retentions. You will get the same deal as new customers.

thanks everyone. Will try that this week. Dish Network actually has some good offers that I plan to present to the retention rep, but I'm trying to keep DirecTV for some local channel coverage, so I'm hoping I don't have to fully cancel to get the right offer. It sucks that it always has to be this way with TV providers. Frown

I know it's been awhile since anyone posted about DirecTV EXISTING CUSTOMER deals so I thought I'd share my experience. We've been a DirecTV customer for 8 years & have called in before to get a deal. Last year we moved & got their mover's package. This year, my contract was up & I wanted to upgrade equipment & lower my monthly bill. It took 3 calls to their retension department, but it was worth it in the end.

Upgraded equipment at no extra cost.
Installation at no cost.
HD service for free (have to have auto pay option, but they do offer it)
$20 off for 6 months (they said to call back when this expired & they should offer it to me again)
Whole Home Service (regular $3/month)
New HD Satellite Dish
2 HD receivers - free
1 HD DVR - free (just pay for service at $8/month)
One time credit of $50 (referral $ that Dish would have given me - go to to see lots of codes for this offer)
Sports Pack free for 6 months (I negotiated a waive of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz for an extra 3 months totaling 6 months for Sports Pak).
Cinema Pak for $19.94 shipping & handling (don't know why when it the tech brings it all!).
My prior bill was $77.99 for 1 standard receiver & 1 dvr (2 tv's). New bill should be $66.98 for 3 tvs all with HD service & HD DVR.

1st call they did a little, 2nd call when I tried to cancel & was moving to Dish, they added the equipment for free, 3rd call, they also gave me $ off my bill. It took a lot of phone time & research on my part, but they finally gave in. I tried for NFL Sunday Ticket, but they didn't go for it.

One other trick, the DirecTV rep told me that I could call EVERY TIME my bill went up because the credits rolled off. They should be able to put them back on. I should reference the rep's name (one who just signed me up for the "deal") & ask for the credit to be put back on. I'm hoping that I won't have to "renew" my contract every time. Longevity with the company seems to play a role in being able to swing deals. Maybe in 2 years I can swing more $ off as I hope not to have to upgrade any more equipment for quite a while. Good luck to anyone else out there for a deal. Dish has some good stuff, but if you want sports, DirecTV seems to be the one to go for.
