Replaceable LED TV bulbs?!?!?!?

akaskoot 101 15 November 25, 2011 at 03:53 PM More Sears Home Services Deals
First off, let me tell you, I am no TV genious. Today my wife bought an LG 55LW5300 from Sears for $1199. Yes I know it is the same price at Amazon and she wouldn`t have had to pay taxes, so this may get returned for that reason alone. But what is really interesting is, they sold her an extended warranty because the bulb replacements cost $300. Like I said, I`m no TV genious but LED TVs don`t have replacent bulbs right? I`m thinking she was lied to or is there something else I`m missing.

TIA for your replies.

LEDs burn out so rare, that you got a bad deal.

The MTBF on the typical solid state electronic device is 500,000 hours minimum. It is basically a bathtub curve. Major burn outs in the first 30 days, which then drops to basically zero for the next 4-6 years then they creep up.

If you really are worried about electronic burn out, self insure. That means everytime you buy an electronic item, put 25% of the extended warranty cost into an account and don't touch it. Do that with a few items and you've covered your risk while maintaining principle for yourself.

Having taken a number of Master level courses in economics and business I can tell you that the profit margin is 85%+ and that is while the stores buy 3rd party insurance that most states require.

Back 10 years ago I worked at BBY during college. They didn't care how much I sold as long as I sold 80% of the people who got a camera an EW. I remember one day selling 15K worth of merchandise in a 5 hour period, but because I didn't get more than 1 or two EW, I was written up for it. Yet, when I only sold 2K of merchandise over an 8 hour shift, but sold everyone an EW I was given bonus hours.

Non-organic LEDs are even better and have an average lifespan of 500,000 hours, and that's not when they tend to burn out but when they drop to half their original brightness.

And how good is a Sears guarantee, considering the company's financial condition? They lost $420M in the past quarter and have had no increase in sales since a decade ago.

odds are the main board will fail before a bulb.

sears warranty is hit or miss. my mom has had good luck with them for washer/dryer. they have reviews on their website for their warranty program.

Sears have one of the highest extended warranty I ever come across. It's not even funny. I've bought extended warranty before from various stores and those prices were fair. My brother's 55" LCD warranty was around $150 for 3 years from another store. Sears wanted my 50" plasma warranty for around 300-$400 for 3 years ( can't quite remember the actual price but it's in that range). I'm not going to buy a warranty that cost almost half of my tv. Freaking rip off.

But it`s LED! Sears is just trying to screw her. They also said it was wifi. Not only not wifi it`s not even internet connectable. I`m gonna have fun with the sales boss today!
