My Desktop is Getting an Upgrade

I'm upgrading my Q9550 'clunker' to something more modern and hip. I need to replace most of the guts and I'd appreciate some help from the other PC building guru's around here because I haven't built any i5/i7 pc's before, and I just want to get things done right. (I wouldn't want to find out that my ram is incompatible with my cpu or something like that) So basically I'll outline what I'm looking to get and it is my hopes that you guys might give me some feedbacks Thumbup

So basically in order to upgrade even just my CPU I need to get a new motherboard, ram, heatsink and maybe a shiny new SSD if prices permit, and already things are looking good considering I just bought this [tigerdirect.com]motherboard for $70 AR, and am looking to spend ~$250 for the rest of the components.

My prospective upgrade:

Q9550 -> i5 2500k
EP45-UD3P -> Z68AP-D3 [tigerdirect.com] (Purchased)
4GB DDR2 1066 -> 8gb DDR3 1600 [newegg.com]/1866 [newegg.com]
Tuniq Tower 120 -> ??? [youtube.com]

Thoughts?

I hope to get some cybermonday deals on some of the parts, but even if I don't I'll be ordering by the end of the week.

I am using 16GB of Ripjaw RAM, as well as a CM 212+ heatsink. I think you should definitely try to squeeze an SSD into your budget, you will be shocked at how much you will notice the difference. A 60GB should be fine (cheap) in tandem with a large HDD.

You must have read my mind because I just ordered a 64gb SSD from staples earlier this morning! $40 is a silky smooth price for 64gb methinks drool

As for the heatsink, I am probably going to order the 212+ and will hopefully get a good ~4.2-4.5ghz out of the 2500k. As for the ram, I'm really content on DDR3 1866, but the set I was looking at jumped up $20 in price so I might look around some more. And my dreams of $180 2500k are dwindling because NCIX stopped PMing microcenter's deal.... *tear*

Well, gaming of course! My HD5850 can keep up on the graphics side of things, but the rest of my computer needed an upgrade. Lots of lag loading files and stuff like that. Presumably this could be fixed with just a faster HDD, but I figure it was time for a bit of an overhaul as well. AND this means that I can more seriously consider getting a second 5850, or maybe step up to a GTX560-570-580.

you don't need 1866 unless you're gonna push 5 GHZ
4.5ghz and lower, 1600 is fine.
with unlocked SB, the Memory speed isn't as much of a factor as it was with the previous gens.
just get these ripjaws, i use them and im at 4.5ghz no sweat.

You have to point the fan on the 212+ out of the back instead of out of the top. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. It could matter, depending on how anal you are.

Also I'm not sure if my mobo (P5Q pro) is compatible in general..

your fine, you have SATA II
you won't have the super max performance that the new SSD that are SATA III do, but it'll still be faster than any physical HDD.

personally, you can never go wrong with Intel, very steady & reliable, and good support
they aren't the fastest SSD's on the market though
the fastest SSD is the ones using the Sandforce SF-2281 (the Kingston HyperX being considered the on of the fastest, and its on sale i believe)
However, Sandforce recently patched a bad bug in their firmware, so i personally stay away from SF Drives.

I would recommend one of the Crucial M4 series SSD.
Very reliable, faster than Intel, but not as fast as SF. Very good speeds now with the latest firmware 0009 out.

Surprisingly, my computer still keeps up with whatever I throw at it. Starcraft 2 at high settings, Supreme Commander at high settings etc etc. Also I have a 9800GTX, which helps alot Big Grin

I recently got on the deal for the intel 160GB myself for a new build I'm putting together. I'm running a 60GB SSD right now and regretted it. Once you load 1 or 2 games on it, it's full. And the advantage of having SSDs is so you can load games on it and have crazy fast start up/load time I'm right 97% of the time. Who cares about the other 4%
