MP3 Player Info * Recommendations (for Ignorant Mom), Please
I would like to get my 12yo an MP3 player for the holidays. I would like to stay under $100 and this will be her only gift besides a CD. I know NOTHING about them, but here are some things that may help you help us:
Big Lots had a Polaroid 4GB MP3 for under $20 on Saturday, but I assumed everyone already had iphones, so I didn't rush out to make a purchase. They sold out at dinnertime, and now eBay is now loaded with them. Any brand suggestions are appreciated. I just want something that might last 1year and not get her ridiculed by the other kids who can afford better. Thank you everyone for taking the time to make our gift giving a bit brighter. |

I'd suggest a 4GB Sandisk Sansa Clip+. It doesn't have a camera, most MP3 players don't. Newegg has the white model [newegg.com] on sale for $30 currently.

Cameras worth having are difficult to find in mp3 players (they are really, really poor quality - think budget cell phone quality). That being said, here are a few:
here [amazon.com] here [amazon.com] This one [amazon.com]doesn't have a camera but is, all else considered, a better mp3 player then the first two. Last edited by hbarnwheeler; 11-28-2011 at 10:04 AM.. |

I was in the same boat with my 10yo boy. I got him a used android cell phone which provides the mp3 player, camera, camcorder, video player and gaming machine all wrapped in one device. I got the HTC eris for $50 and he's been burning it up for a month.
You just don't activate the wireless cell service. He can even surf the web with wifi. |

New phones generally come with a contract. If you do not want to get into a contract then used is generally the way to go.

Coby 4 GB Video MP3 Player with FM Radio (Blue) [amazon.com]
I've got the black version and it does just fine for me. It's small, all plastic, very lightweight, and I've never had an issue with it. I'm the type that just needs to play music in random shuffled fashion. You would use Windows Media Player to sync files and is easy to use. Amazon is out of the 8 GB but still has the 4 GB. |

For instance, this one [virginmobileusa.com] is on sale for $65 right now, no contract required. Might require activation of some kind with Virgin, but if so, you could just get the cheapest one month contract and then never use it as a phone again, no? |

Thanks to everyone for the options! I think my daughter would like the styling of the COBY while I would like the quality of the Sansa Clip. I'll look into deals asap.
Getting a phone seems to be a great idea! Finances forced us to TracFones, and the options there are limited. Could she access Google and YouTube with an unactivated smartphone? Unfortunately, my old Samsung A877 isn't WiFi capable. I'll have to research the options, but the HTC eris ClubMed mentioned seems perfect! Can anyone clue me in what to search for (what search terms to use) while doing my research? (ie- Are all Android phones WiFi enabled?) I want to thank everyone for taking the time to respond. I know we are all busy with work, family, and everyday life - especially at the end of the year, and I want you to know how much I appreciate your time to help make this a gift worth giving. Thank you. |
