Looking for a Tablet PC for an 8 year old, $100 price range

Hello,

I am trying to find a tablet pc for my 8 year old niece for Christmas. She had asked for an iPad 2 but I think this is too expensive, especially for a child her age. I would like to find something about the $100 range which would be good for her. It would be nice if it had the capability to take pictures and even video. I think she would really enjoy those features and then manipulting them on the tablet using an app.

I have searched around on the forum looking for something but there are so many tablets out there it is hard to know what is a good buy and what is not. Any help would be much appreciated.

Doubt you're going to find anything with a camera for $100.

For kids, there is a Leapfrog Leapad. Otherwise, HP Touchpad is $149 but you need to buy a HP $349 + laptop

What do you think about the Kindle fire for $200? I'm thinking about going with that for her.

Kindle Fire is a good choice - a quality tablet for the price, unlike the no-name Chinese tablets which usually get very poor reviews. It doesn't have a camera so she won't be able to take any pictures or videos...

I've also found an HP Touchpad 16GB sealed in the box for $200. Myabe this would be a better choice?

I'd go for the Touchpad if you want a 10" screen, or Kindle Fire if you're OK with 7". Both are nice devices.

Yeah I think she would enjoy the 10" screen, more comparable to the iPad. What do you think about the Operating System on the HP Touchpad? I mean it's pretty much going to be a dead OS at this point right?

Depends on who you talk to. Android is being ported over - it's almost there. I got the base Android OS running on my touchpad, but getting the store app on there is a pain.

The native WebOS is not bad - does all of the basic stuff (reading, games, web, email, etc) with some notable items missing (Netflix??). There's still rumor floating around that HP will sell the entire WebOS to someone & then it'll be revived - who knows.

Overall it's still a great deal for a 10" tablet.

I have the HP Touchpad and the WebOS is adequate. Android is almost there and will be soon. I would go for the HP but honestly I think 8 yrs old is a little young but that is just my opinion.
