Projector
We're redoing our basement and this year's family gift will be a projector and screen, if I can find a good deal/combo (??). Kids will probably want to play their game systems with it, but we at least want to pop in a dvd/blue ray in if possible, even if it's through the game system.I'm not very techie (ok, not AT ALL techie), so can somebody help? TIA
Always looking for Powerade, Gatorade coupons

What's your budget? How big a screen are you looking for? Will lighting be controlled (i.e. able to completely darken the room during the day..or when watching movies)?

I probably should have been more clear. The basement has a "sports pub" look to it, so we will be watching mostly sports through our satellite dish, but yes, I did want the ability to hook up the game systems. The basement will have 4 zones of lighting, so it will be controlled and the tv or projector will be in the darker corner of the basement with little natural light. Thanks again for the help. I'm off to check out the recommendations ($200 bulbs...that irks me!) |

So true . Remember that you want to buy lamp modules(199.99) for projectors NOT BULBS(59.99). The lamps last up to 4,000 hrs. Pricetrace.com: Price information for Optoma BL-FP230C Replacement Lamp for EP749/EP719H [pricetrace.com] Go with 70 inch LED or Plasma(1599.99) if you don't want to pay the lamp cost. You also have to change your SD account settings to get instant updates on your post. Last edited by FAL; 12-06-2011 at 12:28 PM.. |

IMO nothing beats the ability to watch TV/movies/gaming than on a large 110"+ screen. However, it all depends on your budget, b/c it's not as easy as buying a TV where you get an "all in one" solution. You have to factor in $ for your screen + sound (speakers + receiver + wiring). Unless you have ~$2,000+, it's really hard to a satisfactory front projection setup these days.
My math: ~$1200 for a projector that has enough light output to be able to watch stuff without a bat cave (who wants to watch sports w/a bunch of people in a 0% light room?) + have great pic quality. $150 for an entry-level screen $300 minimum for a receiver $350 minimum for a budget LCR setup. I just completed building my HT setup in the basement and it's going to end up costing more than $5K for just the essentials. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing compared to the $15K setup I built for my sister lol. Then again, I can enjoy a nice theater in the comfort of my home on a 130" wide, scope screen
