you all are getting the rebate wrong. its an instant rebate already figured into the price. All of canons rebates are like this, except some MIR printer combo rebates that come around quite often. With that 20/40 offer, it'll be 320 out the door. There's no extra $40.
A rebate is currently available for the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens.
Rebate Amount: $40.00
Rebate Period: Nov 27, 2011 - Jan 7, 2012
Says it's an instant rebate on Canon site, not sure if we can get it buying at Newegg.
The instant rebate is a discount granted to the seller. So instead of NewEgg paying $XX for each lens they buy for stock, they pay $XX - $40.
Some sellers choose to pass this savings onto the buyer via "sales", ($379 - $40 [10% SALE!]). Some show the lenses as rebates. ($379 - $40 INSTANT REBATE). While others just take the final price they charge the customer, minus $40 from it and call it a day.
Long story short, that instant rebate isn't a discount from Canon to you. It's a discount from Canon to the store you buy the lens from.
