Help with Home Theater System, keeps shutting off

hellfire127 791 76 December 5, 2011 at 04:04 PM
Ok, I just bought the Pioneer VSX-1021-K receiver and Jamo S426 HCS3 5.1 speaker package. Since I began using them, the Pioneer receiver has been randomly shutting itself off without any warning. I tried all the solutions in the manual to adjust some settings but it still shuts itself off. Then I began to wonder if it's the speakers themselves. I have just finished reading most of the speakers' ohms. The center reads 3.5ohm and the rest around 4.5ohm. The speakers are supposed to be 6ohm....do I have a dead speaker package here?

I've dealt with car audio but never with home audio.

I just took unplugged all speakers from receiver and left only the receiver on to see if it turns itself. Will wait a little longer to see if it does.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

This is my first home theater system and I'm quite disappointed. I may have to start selling my speaker system locally and get a new speaker system package.

I'm having similar issue with the Pioneer VSX-1021-K with the Mirage 5.1 speak set, using the Mirage CC speaker as the center speaker. Here is what I have found :

0) It happens when there is explosion type of sound, for example, in the movie Star Trek (2009), when the ships go into warp speed.
1) It only happens when Surround Sound mode, when in Stereo mode its fine
2) It only happens when the center speaker is connected. If I disconnect the center speaker the receiver does not shut itself off.

The receiver shutting itself off is a safety feature I believe. But I'm not sure why it is happening as I have replaced the speaker wire, I have tried with different center speaker.

Hmm after some further testing, the receiver shut itself off with just the tv and ps3 on.....I've replaced the HDMI cables on both the tv and ps3 to see if it's the cables themselves.

OK - maybe a long shot, but you did not load the app on your iphone then sit on the phone, effectively butt-shutting it off? :-D

Well, it looks like the culprit was a Monster HDMI cable that I was using with the PS3. I switched it out with a no-name brand and hasn't shut off on me.......yet.

Will continue to use it regularly and see if it shuts off anytime. HDMI cable.....that's probably the last thing I would even check....

Is this a heat problem? I know some receivers get really hot and then protect themselves by shutting down. I would hook up an mp3 player with RCA cables and play the music at a normal volume and see what happens. This way you could isolate the cable issues or source issues.

Sounds to me like an overload, especially with OP's case with the speakers that have very low impedance.

Iagree some sort of overload protection kicking in. Whether or not it's faulty receiver or speakers, I'm not sure. Try disconnecting only the center channel and run it for a while to see if it shuts off. A speakers ohms is dynamic when content is being driven through it. However, it should remain constant when off. 3.5ohms on a 6ohm rated speaker seems a bit low.

Yeah I'll have to try disconnecting the center again and wait a few hours to see if it shuts off.

Chances of getting a bad brand new in box receiver are low but I may have gotten one.
