HP employees will have a chance to purchase a refurbished HP TouchPad via eBay before the sale is announced to the general public. Specifically, the TouchPads will be offered through one of HP's newest marketplaces for close-out and refurbished HP products, the new HP eBay Store <http://stores.ebay.com/hewlettpackard> .
look around
This product will NOT be available through any other HP stores, such as the Home & Home Office store, Small & Medium Business store, HP EPP or the HP Business Outlet. PLEASE DO NOT CALL ANY OF THESE CALL CENTERS BECAUSE IT DISRUPTS REGULAR SALES ACTIVITIES AND THEY'RE UNABLE TO PROCESS AN ORDER FOR THE TOUCHPADS ANYWAY.

In an effort to give HP employees first chance at a very limited supply of refurbished TouchPads, there will be a short delay between when the product is posted live for sale on eBay and when the general public is notified of the sale.

Refurbished HP TouchPads, both 16GB and 32GB versions, will be posted for sale through the HP eBay store at: 6:00 p.m. (Central Time), Sunday, December 11th. If you are interested in purchasing a refurbished TouchPad, please make yourself a reminder to log-on to eBay a few minutes before the sale starts to make your purchase.

The TouchPads will be available for sale here (under "Laptops"):

.

There is also an optional 3-piece Accessory bundle with a Case, Charging Dock & Wireless Keyboard for $79 (est. value $199.97).

.

Purchases must be made through the HP eBay store via PayPal only. If you do not have eBay or PayPal accounts, create your accounts before the sale begins to avoid delays.

.

.

There will be a limit of two (2) TouchPad SKUs per eBay member, sold on a first come, first served basis.

.

This sale is not associated with any HP-sponsored employee purchase program and there are no additional discounts for HP employees off the HP eBay store price.

Stolen unit from Indianapolis. I contacted UPS and they won't help me. They told me to check with my neighbors, and then have the seller open an investigation with them. My neighbors don't have it, so I sent HP a message through ebay. HP sent me a message back saying per the tracking info it was delivered. I already explained this situation in my original email, so I sent the same thing back. I am awaiting a 2nd response from HP. But it doesn't look good so far. I will be opening a paypal dispute tomorrow. EDIT- I called the # and they were very helpful and said they are sending me a replacement, which will be here by christmas.
Received 16GB when 32GB was paid for - 1 (from TX)

How to Update Refurbished Touchpad from OS version 3.0.2 to latest 3.0.4

I got my Touchpad today, but the newly arrived refurbished Touchpad is running OS version 3.0.2 and claims to be up to date. Of course, we know that the latest OS is 3.0.9 from the retail Touchpads.

In order to update it to the latest OS, you have to use webOS Doctor. First, go through the Setup steps on your Touchpad and create a webOS account, aka HP Profile. Then to go http://www.hpwebos.com/account and log in. Clicked on Device Options and download the webOS Doctor.

Once webOS Doctor is downloaded, run it and follow the steps until it asks you to connect the Touchpad. Before you connect, you have to put your Touchpad into USB Update mode using these steps [hpwebos.com] listed on the webOS Doctor FAQ.

Then the Next button should show up and it will proceed. The whole process took about 1 hour, and my Touchpad is now running on the latest 3.0.9 and hopefully it will receive future OS updates too (if not use these steps again).

-- c46

FYI, I tried to update from 3.0.2 to 3.0.9 for multiple times without success yesterday. And gave a first shot today, it updates smoothly by itself, takes around 20 minutes. If you don't wanna to go through webOS doctor, you may just hold on for a while and just keep on trying. System itself doesn't have too much difference.

Just a heads up. The 30 lbs showing under your tracking IS only for 1 Touchpad. If you ordered 2, you can track the other one by REFERENCE if you have or set up an account with UPS to be able to view "Additional Information". Once you are logged in and use your existing tracking number, you will see under additional information a reference number. Simply take the last number of that reference number and increase or decrease by 1 and then copy and paste that to "track by reference", select United States and your zip code and do your search. You should see the other package in transit. I have 4 separate shipments, 3 from Indianapolis and 1, scheduled for delivery today, from Edison NJ. Again, you need to create an account with UPS to see this additional information and reference number. I have delivery alerts set up with "My UPS" and that's how I know.

Alternate tracking by REFERENCE without signing up for UPS account.

Why would it need hardware acceleration? You realize that even under Windows, flash hardware acceleration is pretty meager. Mainly just scaling on most platforms. Most times, it's not even turned on.

The touchpad runs flash just fine thank you very much. Hulu ran just fine on the touchpad until Hulu excluded it. It's not a technical problem. It's a licensing one.

Case closed.
Hardware browsing acceleration. Not flash. Flash worked so so, but then again is far from the latest and probably not going to be updated.

The browsing experience on the TP is the slowest of any tablet and choppy, with pages often not rendering correctly.

In addition to actual usage, both Browsermark and sunspider JavaScript test illustrate it's slower.

Don;t get me wrong, I liked the device at $99. However, without support and any actual updates, and with fully-supported android devices rapidly dropping in price, it's not for me.

Weird. Guess I don't go to the same websites as everyone else because I never noticed any poorly rendered web pages or slow and choppiness. Never had a problem with it on SD either except for the Javascript/CSS dropdown navigation.

Then again, I turned off hardware acceleration on Firefox on my PC because it makes the text all fuzzy and I didn't notice any difference except for sharper text.

I thought they were just using that binary dump of Android from Qualcomm labs to salvage drivers from. With source, they can write/modify their own. Without source, it's hard to write a driver from scratch unless the hardware maker has made all the technical data available. I don't think HP ever did.
they've done that from the start making or modifying drivers. like i said, the touchpad didn't use many drivers as it was all done in userspace. had they not been able to before we wouldn't have anything resembling a working android port. so they've been very good at what they do.

Exactly. That's why the source is so valuable. To get the I/O addresses. Why wouldn't they release the source for the Touchpad or the Pre? It's got to compile to something as a reference. What other references do they have? Especially since they are dead products. There's no reason not to.
The reason being that they do not make the individual components. As you mentioned, for instance, they use a Qualcomm version of an ARM processor. There is also BT, WiFi, and other hardware that they do not own the rights to. They license all of the dev info from the manufacturer. You need authorization from the person who owns the IP to release it to the public. Just look at Atheros. You don't see any Atheros drivers in the Linux kernel because they will only release binary blobs (unless they changed this when I had to deal with this at work 4+ years ago).

I read earlier here that people were wondering what will happen to the WebOS. It appears that they've donated it to the open-source developers: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16121361

The browser does not support hardware acceleration.

No netflix etc etc etc.

Then you have the 1001 tweaks and patches required to get it running okay. Windows 5 all over again.
You have no idea what you're talking about. The reason NetFlix is not supported through the browser has nothing whatsoever to do with "hardware acceleration"; it's due to NetFlix's browser implementation using Silverlight (which doesn't exist on mobile platforms) and requiring a dedicated app to use it otherwise. There is no such app on WebOS, for now.

You can watch 1080p Flash videos within the browser. Guess what: that requires hardware acceleration for Flash.

The Touchpad is just as, if not more so when overclocked, powerful than the iPad 2. And personally, I'm a big fan of it's open, customizable nature, over iOS, which allows me to "tweak" and modify it as I see fit.

I really don't get where people are coming from when saying something like this. I have never once come across a site which did not render correctly, or rendered slowly, using the Touchpad, and I use it on a daily basis.

Sure, it's a bit behind the iPad 2, but only because of the disparity in developer support. Hardware wise, and OS-wise, I much prefer the Touchpad to iOS. For one thing, I feel like I own the device I purchased, instead of the company.

No it's due to the fact that nobody is supporting or creating apps for the platform and device.

To bad the actual manufacturer decided to scrap the entire line, because it apparently worked so well. I guess the overall consensus of reviews from the majority of IT sites were also wrong?

I owned the TP and it wasn't too bad. However, when considering the overall package (device + OS + support + future + HP owning it) there are much better alternatives.

Fanboys of defunct devices are nothing new, but to suggest that a device that failed epically can match the number #1 tablet, that even leaves even #2 in the dust, is ridiculous.

Like I said earlier, simple unbiased generic tests illustrate the lack of performance of the device. Then you also have the actual manufacturer themselves, who stated it was not up to par.

here you have a good point. only apple can sell products at such a price and expect them to fly off the shelves. even if its only an okey product.

so the number 2 tablet currenty is now the amazon kindle fire. your saying this is not better in everyway then the fire?

No one is fanboying about this but PLEASE tell me where i can get this same hardware alone for $100. Any problem webos itself has is solved when you dual boot android so why try to troll by caling people fanboys?

Maybe if your a bum with only 50 bucks to buy a Tablet the TP its perfect for you.
Maybe if you first took a minute before replying and then proofread your comments, there could be some intelligent conversation here.

1) for $50 you can't buy decent electronics anyway (maybe only lower-grade Chinese stuff - no offense);
2) this thread isn't about managing your finances. TP is a good product. It's even more appealing to the general audience (not special audience, like yourself) when its price is drastically lowered.

...the easiest path might be to use its license: the GPLv2...
