For those who purchased a Verizon smartphone after the unlimited data ended, you can still get unlimited data by calling *611 and asking them to add unlimited MHS. A 4G phone is required. You may have to be persistent, and it may take several calls, but I was able to do it with one call. A "perk" of adding unlimited MHS is that you will be pushed to unlimited data as well, according to the rep I talked to. I checked online, and sure enough, my friend's account that I was trying it on had unlimited data and unlimited MHS. If at a future time, you feel you do not need MHS, you can cancel mhs (you can do it online) and it has been reported that you still keep unlimited data.

When i talked to the rep, at first, he was trying to get me to switch to a data plan that had data and mhs. This is not what you want, you want to have the mhs as a feature addon.

ymmv of course on these types of promos.

edit: mhs = mobile hot spot $30/mo addon feature. as said before, you can remove it any time and your unlimited data should remain.
The $30 is for the month, if, say you use it for 15 days, then it will be prorated to $15 and so on.

Edit looks like some are able to do it with 3G phones as well, unlimited data but 2gb mhs.

Method:
  1. Dial *611 from your Verizon phone, or 1-800-922-0204 from any phone.
  2. Wait for computer CSR to go through the main menu. You will need your Verizon phone # and account PIN or last 4 of SSN.
  3. Hit option 4.
  4. When it asks you what you would like to do today say "Add a feature." You will be transferred to a live Verizon Customer Service representative.
  5. If you have a 3G device (which includes all iPhones): Say you would like to add the $20 2GB 3G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $20/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
If you have a 4G device: Say you would like to add the $30 Unlimited 4G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. According to http://stopthecap.com/2011/07/12/...r-account/ , they may be able to locate this feature via referencing feature code #76153. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $30/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
  6. After one of the MHS features above are added to your account, you will now have the $29.99 unlimited data plan, which can be verified via the My Verizon app on your device or at http://www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon
  7. {OPTIONAL - if you don't want the Mobile Hotspot feature} Log into My Verizon and remove the Mobile Hotspot FEATURE from your account. It is recommended to wait at least a day to remove the feature. The $29.99 unlimited data plan should remain on your account.
  8. If they say they can't add that feature to your plan, or that you must bundle your data + mobile hotspot service together as a single data plan, tell them thank you, hang up, and repeat the steps above.

EDIT: there are reports that the loophole may be closing and Verizon may revert your plan back to tiered:
http://consumerist.com/2012/01/ve...icing.html
http://www.dslreports.com/shownew...sed-117668

However, people are still reporting success. There have not been any official statements from Verizon about closing this loophole, and only one person in the articles above reported being reverted back to a tiered data plan.

If that is true then that would suck for iPhone and other 3g users. No iPhone would be able to keep unlimited then when upgrading.
Unless you pay full retail price for the new Iphone then you want be able to keep unlimited data

I am hearing that is not the case and I would upgrade to a 4G device now if you have unlimited data just to be safe

That is not going to happen and is a troll like post. There are training slides showing that you can not upgrade from 3G unlimited to 4G unlimited after June 28th and keep it

After June 28,you can't upgrade from 4G to 4G on a subsidized phone and keep unlimited data either.

Anything can happen, but I don't see verizon kicking unlimited data for those on contract in August 15.
I have no proof on that. Only proof on the June 28th date. I don't believe it either, but it's what I've been told. I think it was misconstrued for something else maybe.

Only time will tell, on what Verizon wants to do about it.

I am 99.9% sure that it won't happen on that date. Even if verizon could legally do it for people on contract, the timing makes no sense. It is rare for verizon to make major changes so close together. Also, I am assuming that they want to wait a few months after the iPhone lte comes out before implementing such a change, a kind of bait and switch if you will.

Verizon loves bait and switch, they have attempted to bait and switch me several times now so I don't really put anything past them.
Right, and I agree with you on that. So I have no idea what's going to happen August 15th. Only time will tell.

If someone else has unlimited data and used your upgrade to get the phone, then your account would lose unlimited data (assuming after June 28th), but the other person's unlimited data line would be ok. Verizon confirmed this, you can buy phone at full retail, cpo, or on ebay and still maintain unlimited data after June 28

Data is an add-on. It's part of the whole "We have the right to change your plan/services at anytime.." bit in your contract. Not part of your plan's contract. Good luck. Smilie

The August 15th date is sketchy at this point as I have no solid material to back it up, but god forbid that happens. The fury of 100 million geeks will reign on Verizon. LMAO

People if you have a 3G phone and buy a 4G phone from ebay, craigslist or at full retail price it will not affect your unlimited if you have it..... it's the phone itself that picks up the 4G signal not the data plan it does not matter you can buy a 3G phone and downgrade from a 4G and your plan is still the same you just are not able to pick up the 4G signal cause your phone can't.
to be able to use 4G you need to have a subscription profile as a 4G sub (besides the sim), so it will need a change in verizon's network. I am not saying if it will or will not affect your data plan, i dont know that, but it cannot just work simply because you have a 4G phone
