For those who purchased a Verizon smartphone after the unlimited data ended, you can still get unlimited data by calling *611 and asking them to add unlimited MHS. A 4G phone is required. You may have to be persistent, and it may take several calls, but I was able to do it with one call. A "perk" of adding unlimited MHS is that you will be pushed to unlimited data as well, according to the rep I talked to. I checked online, and sure enough, my friend's account that I was trying it on had unlimited data and unlimited MHS. If at a future time, you feel you do not need MHS, you can cancel mhs (you can do it online) and it has been reported that you still keep unlimited data.

When i talked to the rep, at first, he was trying to get me to switch to a data plan that had data and mhs. This is not what you want, you want to have the mhs as a feature addon.

ymmv of course on these types of promos.

edit: mhs = mobile hot spot $30/mo addon feature. as said before, you can remove it any time and your unlimited data should remain.
The $30 is for the month, if, say you use it for 15 days, then it will be prorated to $15 and so on.

Edit looks like some are able to do it with 3G phones as well, unlimited data but 2gb mhs.

Method:
  1. Dial *611 from your Verizon phone, or 1-800-922-0204 from any phone.
  2. Wait for computer CSR to go through the main menu. You will need your Verizon phone # and account PIN or last 4 of SSN.
  3. Hit option 4.
  4. When it asks you what you would like to do today say "Add a feature." You will be transferred to a live Verizon Customer Service representative.
  5. If you have a 3G device (which includes all iPhones): Say you would like to add the $20 2GB 3G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $20/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
If you have a 4G device: Say you would like to add the $30 Unlimited 4G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. According to http://stopthecap.com/2011/07/12/...r-account/ , they may be able to locate this feature via referencing feature code #76153. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $30/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
  6. After one of the MHS features above are added to your account, you will now have the $29.99 unlimited data plan, which can be verified via the My Verizon app on your device or at http://www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon
  7. {OPTIONAL - if you don't want the Mobile Hotspot feature} Log into My Verizon and remove the Mobile Hotspot FEATURE from your account. It is recommended to wait at least a day to remove the feature. The $29.99 unlimited data plan should remain on your account.
  8. If they say they can't add that feature to your plan, or that you must bundle your data + mobile hotspot service together as a single data plan, tell them thank you, hang up, and repeat the steps above.

EDIT: there are reports that the loophole may be closing and Verizon may revert your plan back to tiered:
http://consumerist.com/2012/01/ve...icing.html
http://www.dslreports.com/shownew...sed-117668

However, people are still reporting success. There have not been any official statements from Verizon about closing this loophole, and only one person in the articles above reported being reverted back to a tiered data plan.

Holy Shit!!!

It worked!!!!! I tried to add the feature online and it prompted me that I had to call in to add that feature. I then called in and it took the CSR about 15 minutes to figure out how to add it to my HTC Rezound. She was finally able to do it. I then went online and removed the MHS feature immediately.

I now have an unlimited data plan for a penny less than I was paying for 4GB! THANKS OP!

* Only caveat: The CSR threw in a random disclosure that Verizon might change this Unlimited plan in the future, so I shouldn't get used to using more than 4GB in case they do change it. She did however, say that Verizon would notify us if that happened. Really weird that she knew to throw that in there, without me saying a thing. Thought it was worth noting to the rest of you. *

I had to call three times. The first two reps, added the $50 bundle, and I called them back to reverse it. 3rd rep was able to do it without a problem. I just told her that I needed to see the two different charges on my account.

I really want to ditch AT&T. If I want to go with Verizon (so I'll be a new customer, signing a new contract, etc), will this work?

You need to get the phone first or at least have it shipped. I guess once your account shows up in Verizon's system you can try adding the plan...

Do what GoldenBears did above. Go onto your vzw.com account and try to add the feature and then tell the CSR what you see. Also, say your friend just did it!

Edit: My phone was shipped and called again. Was told by a couple reps that once I "received" the phone I could add features. Here's to hoping I can add it tomorrow... Embarrassment

Got it in the first call!

I told the rep I was trying to add 4G mobile hotspot feature for my phone online through My Verizon, but when I was checking out it asks me to contact customer support because they need to make some changes to my account. Then he asked if it was a 2G mobile hotspot. I said no. In the description of 4G mobile hotspot, it tells me it's unlimited. That's about it. Finished the call in 3 minutes!

Very thankful for this post.

I spent an hour this week speaking to the regional executive's office about reinstating an Unlimited Plan on the line that I just fixed per the instructions on this post. The answer they kept giving me was that they had no way of physically adding the plan back on. It was a feature that was no longer available.

Well...looks like we proved that it is a feature that is still available!

Thanks again OP!
