For those who purchased a Verizon smartphone after the unlimited data ended, you can still get unlimited data by calling *611 and asking them to add unlimited MHS. A 4G phone is required. You may have to be persistent, and it may take several calls, but I was able to do it with one call. A "perk" of adding unlimited MHS is that you will be pushed to unlimited data as well, according to the rep I talked to. I checked online, and sure enough, my friend's account that I was trying it on had unlimited data and unlimited MHS. If at a future time, you feel you do not need MHS, you can cancel mhs (you can do it online) and it has been reported that you still keep unlimited data.

When i talked to the rep, at first, he was trying to get me to switch to a data plan that had data and mhs. This is not what you want, you want to have the mhs as a feature addon.

ymmv of course on these types of promos.

edit: mhs = mobile hot spot $30/mo addon feature. as said before, you can remove it any time and your unlimited data should remain.
The $30 is for the month, if, say you use it for 15 days, then it will be prorated to $15 and so on.

Edit looks like some are able to do it with 3G phones as well, unlimited data but 2gb mhs.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Method:
  1. Dial *611 from your Verizon phone, or 1-800-922-0204 from any phone.
  2. Wait for computer CSR to go through the main menu. You will need your Verizon phone # and account PIN or last 4 of SSN.
  3. Hit option 4.
  4. When it asks you what you would like to do today say "Add a feature." You will be transferred to a live Verizon Customer Service representative.
  5. If you have a 3G device (which includes all iPhones): Say you would like to add the $20 2GB 3G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $20/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
If you have a 4G device: Say you would like to add the $30 Unlimited 4G Mobile Hotspot FEATURE to your phone. According to http://stopthecap.com/2011/07/12/...r-account/ , they may be able to locate this feature via referencing feature code #76153. When you add this MHS feature, you will be charged $30/month in addition to the $29.99 unlimited data plan.
  6. After one of the MHS features above are added to your account, you will now have the $29.99 unlimited data plan, which can be verified via the My Verizon app on your device or at http://www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon
  7. {OPTIONAL - if you don't want the Mobile Hotspot feature} Log into My Verizon and remove the Mobile Hotspot FEATURE from your account. It is recommended to wait at least a day to remove the feature. The $29.99 unlimited data plan should remain on your account.
  8. If they say they can't add that feature to your plan, or that you must bundle your data + mobile hotspot service together as a single data plan, tell them thank you, hang up, and repeat the steps above.

EDIT: there are reports that the loophole may be closing and Verizon may revert your plan back to tiered:
http://consumerist.com/2012/01/ve...icing.html
http://www.dslreports.com/shownew...sed-117668

However, people are still reporting success. There have not been any official statements from Verizon about closing this loophole, and only one person in the articles above reported being reverted back to a tiered data plan.

DEAL IS DEAD

I've contacted verizon multi times and they dont offer unlimited MHS anymore. They don't have a code or anything to even search.

Frown sucks since i just switched to verizon yesterday!
Deal is not dead. Unlimited MHS is still available. Read the wiki and follow the directions. Keep trying.

No luck here. One rep said she could add feature code but the online audit system will catch it now and/or later.

This is what worries me. That they will audit everyone a month from now after all of our billing cycles, realize people dropped the MHS, and put us all back on 2gb data plans.

I'm worried about losing out on my 4gb plan and being dropped directly to 2gb Frown

Deal is not dead. Tried 2 times earlier today and the 3rd time was the charm. I was able to add the 4g to my bionic and also to both iphones on my account. Rep said if I don't like it then just cancel at anytime.

I simply asked to add the mobile hotspot feature and the nice young lady said "sure no problem" and she was done in about 5 seconds. She quickly asked if there was anything else and I started a conversation with her as I logged in and confirmed the unlimited data. I then proceeded to ask if there was the same feature available for the Iphones on my account. As she was looking it up, I b'sed her about using the hotspot to replace my home internet and how I hate Uverse and she agreed and said she added it to the other lines as well and wished me luck on using the hotspot as home internet and again said that I could cancel it at any time.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but anytime I call Verizon CS and speak to a male, I seem to get all the company line b.s. from them. I always get things done when speaking to a female rep and have always had a pleasant experience with them.

When you couldn't get it to work, you post it in jumbo font, but in a tiny font when it works? I know you must have been frustrated when it didn't work after multiple calls, but please edit your original post (the jumbo font one), so others are not mislead.
Cheers.

Ok just did it. I actually just opened a new account at a Verizon store, ported my number, and picked up the HTC Rezound around 6:30PM. I came home, called 611 around 7:40PM, and asked the guy to add the MHS for $30/m. Now it shows on my account that I have unlimited data!

Worked great for me, just called in, option e, add a feature. When the lady came on, I told her I wanted to add a feature, gave her the code...waited 15 seconds, and it was done. She did say "thats strange, it put you on an unlimited data plan" ;-D

I did notice though that it only changed the phone I added the hotspot on to unlimited, my wife's galaxy nexus is still showing the 4gb cap. Im going to give it a day or two to see if hers changes as well, it may be that you have to add the hotspot to each line you want converted to unlimited.

honestly 50$ for unlimited is not that bad. especially if you use your phone 24/7 like i do. I prolly use about 10+ gb of data monthly so this is worth it. I don't know if im gonna try to cancel the mhs to obtain the unlimited. cause it would SUCK if you cancelled and next month they actually take it out and give you the 2gb plan and can't double it since the promotion ended.. lol

My friend works at Verizon and he is aware of this. He stated Verizon can go with reverting you back to the 2gb or letting you keep the unlimited. His opinion is that they will remove the unlimited plan, stating Verizon is all about the money. Just Iike their new $2 fee for one time payment. The amount of people th would anger by downgrading them to 2gb will be very small. Hopefully they don't remove it, but between their audits and greed for money I don't think the odds are good of them letting you keep them.

I got this to work today after 5 previous failures the day before. I originally read about this on another forum. But following the instructions here I got it to work on the first attempt today.

Whatever you do, do not say the word unlimited. If you say unlimited you are toast. I'm a new Verizon customer, been on there a month. Convo went something like this...

ME: "Hi I'd like to add the $30 4g hotspot feature to my plan."

REP: "Ok, I can do that for you, just one second."

...typing "hm" typing...

"Hm, it looks like it's changing your data plan, if you do this you will no longer have the 4gb plan."

ME: (Playing dumb) "Oh, well how much do I get?"

Rep puts me on hold, comes back, asks if I want to switch to the 29.99 unlimited plan. I say yes, done deal!

He said he's never seen that happen before, so keep trying until you get a nice Rep who's not hip to it yet.

Thanks to the OP!

Your joking right.

There would be a grip of people that would call in and complain and it would actually probably void there contracts.

BBB would be over whelmed with complaints.

Why would I joke? What do I have to gain? Nothing at all. It was just his opinion. I'm sure you filed your BBB complaint for the $2 fee charge, correct?
