Deal Details

I went to get service from PlayStation for my broken and out of warranty CECHA01 (60GB) YLOD PS3 and was offered to upgrade it to a factory re-certified CECH-2501A (PS3 160GB) for $99. It comes with a 90 day limited service warranty.

Although, the offer states otherwise, you do in fact get a CECH-2501A 160GB PS3.

Service request link.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
• 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
• High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
• Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
• Two USB ports
• HDMI output for 1080p resolution
• Plays DVDs and CDs
• Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
• And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

Confirmed that G01 is not authorized for this offer. Will repair for $99 + state of residence taxes.

UPDATE 7/26/2013 - Sony has started replacing these old models with the latest super slim model specifically CECH-4001B (250GB). Whether or not that's a good thing is up to you.

Which model of PS3 is your YLOD? Just wondering if this offer is relative to that.

I have a 40gb with a busted blu-ray drive/laser but I'm guessing it won't be part of this offer.

I could never get my PS3 to properly play Barbie's Riding Adventure for the PS1. It wouldn't recognize the controller.

True story.

Ahh there we go. I bet this offer is related to that still valuable backwards compatible 60gb. Us dudes with broken 40gb's are probably out of luck. If someone with a 40gb can confirm that would be awesome. Won't have access to my specific model and serial # until later tonight.

I think this deal is only for the original 60 GB PS3s. (not sure about the 40GB ones though)

I heard of this deal a few months ago and tried on my broken CECHE01 80 GB ps3, but didn't receive the offer for a $99 slim.

I know it was after I entered my model and serial number, but after that I don't remember. I'm sorry. I just tried to enter the info again, but since I've already used my serial number it said it was "not a valid serial number."

Could very well be good sir. I just thought I'd post it since I did a search and didn't see anything about it.

They probably ran out of replacement 60GBs at this point. It cost me around $150 to send mine in about a year ago and I was sent back another 60gb refurb. Wouldn't mind a slim at this point.. uses a hell of alot less electric.

I had the same problem. I bought the laser assembly on ebay for $50 and installed it. Works perfect now.
