Deal Details

I went to get service from PlayStation for my broken and out of warranty CECHA01 (60GB) YLOD PS3 and was offered to upgrade it to a factory re-certified CECH-2501A (PS3 160GB) for $99. It comes with a 90 day limited service warranty.

Although, the offer states otherwise, you do in fact get a CECH-2501A 160GB PS3.

Service request link.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
• 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
• High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
• Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
• Two USB ports
• HDMI output for 1080p resolution
• Plays DVDs and CDs
• Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
• And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

Thanks for the info OP. Just went through fill out my info, serial number and everything. Second screen gave me the option to upgrade from my 60GB original fatboy to a "refurb 160gb slim" for $99. Opted for that. Funny thing is the email and the receipt says trade for "160gb NEW." I hope that is the case. It would be awesome.

Got the YLOD on Saturday. Would not boot up, did the fix, and now it boots but the wont get past the cross bar menu. Wont open apps or read media. Thanks again for the info. I'll post an update when I receive it.

I have fixed several hundred PS3 consoles using a Infared rework station. All PS3's will red light (rlod/ylod) not a matter of if but when.
The thermal compound on the GPU and CPU dries out with age then they run hot, add years of dust, cigarette smoke , smoke from weed, putting the console in an enclosed entertainment center all this causes them to run hotter which causes the solder joints to fail and /or the GPU chip gets damaged.

The most prone models are A01, B01, E01, E01mg, G01 models, but it can happen to any model even a slim.

There is NO permanent fix for the YLOD/RLOD if there was SONY would give more then a 90 day warranty on the repair just like Apple give One year on there refurbs...But SONY don't .

I have confirmed that my repairs have lasted anywhere from 3.5 months to 11months...maybe some longer...never heard back from the customer to prove it. Think of the repair as an opportunity to BACKUP your console and save all your game data because you probably have never backed it up....after you do that...any other playing time is a BONUS! BACKUP everytime before you shutit down, then when that console fails, you will have the backup to restore to your new console because you cannot just swap out the drives as the console will reformat that drive.

You will get similar results from reballing.

Not really. I am not a big gamer. If I did play games, I never did for more than 2-3 hours at a time. Same as you, I pretty much used it for Netflix/Hulu and as my main Blu-ray player. Went pretty strong or I got really lucky because it lasted me from 2006 until last week.

Ebay prices seem to fluctuate between $150-$200 for 60gb models. After fees and shipping I doubt it would be worth much more than trading it in for a refurb one unless you can find someone on Craigslist to flip it.

If I've had mine 'fixed' once (thus it has the sticker broken on the side and it reads 'void' on it), can I still do this program?

FYI for anyone on the fence (YMMV but based on my experience it seems they'll take anything):

[TLDR version: fixed YLOD PS3 myself twice, attempted third time and totally fried it, no power, no lights, inside of PS3 a wreck had an obviously fried motherboard, multiple stripped screws/broken clips, and generally in awful shape, sent to Sony and refurb model shipped the very next day, no problems at all]

I had a CECHE01 fat PS3 that got the YLOD. This was the second time I got the YLOD - first time was several years ago and that time was under warranty luckily. This time of course it was not. What to do? I did research online and used the heat gun method and got the unit working. Easy enough. It lasted about a month. Did the heat gun method again and this time it only lasted a couple days. Crap, gonna have to try something else.

The heat gun method didn't work this time I so did some further research and found a video where a guy baked his PS3 in his oven that allegedly worked. I did this carefully and upon putting my PS3 back together I had no power whatsoever. No lights, no nothing.

I contacted a few repair places online and nobody wanted to touch it. Pretty much the consensus was that my system was now beyond any repair. I decided my best chance was to try sending it into Sony for this deal.

Oh and genius me still had a disc stuck inside. I opened the PS3 one more time and got the disc out. I wasn't taking a chance by sending them my Skyrim! Although I stupidly forgot to back up my data so I lost a hundred hours of play and I don't think I'll be doing that over, but we'll see...

Now of course through all this time I had accidentally done some damage to the inside of the PS3. The rubber thing that hides the T10 screw broke in half and I lost half of it. The T10 screw was nearly stripped and I really struggled to get it out the last time. I broke the clips on a couple of the ribbon cables inside (although I could still snap them into place with some work and they held). The large screws that hold the plates against the motherboard were almost all stripped. The motherboard had gunk all over it from when I had insulated the chips for the oven and in no way was I getting all of it off. There were also burn marks on the motherboard - pretty sure those were from the oven and they were fairly obvious. I'm probably forgetting a few other things, but there were various other screws stripped and things that didn't fit right - IMO this PS3 was in about as poor as condition as possible to send to Sony for this deal.

So I held my breath and sent it in. I included a note in the box that I had opened the unit to remove a disc. It was delivered to Sony and my refurb PS3 shipped out the very next day! It's the slim model that others have been receiving. It's great to have a PS3 again Smilie
