Deal Details

I went to get service from PlayStation for my broken and out of warranty CECHA01 (60GB) YLOD PS3 and was offered to upgrade it to a factory re-certified CECH-2501A (PS3 160GB) for $99. It comes with a 90 day limited service warranty.

Although, the offer states otherwise, you do in fact get a CECH-2501A 160GB PS3.

Service request link.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
• 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
• High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
• Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
• Two USB ports
• HDMI output for 1080p resolution
• Plays DVDs and CDs
• Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
• And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

Hello. It is a CECHA01 60GB. (Added to my post).
I have this one too, blinking red light. Ended up getting the 160GB Bundle during black friday to replace it, but this trade-in offer might work out for the bedroom or something.

Or should I just get the thing fixed locally (~$50) & keep it (or try to sell it off)? I know the 60GB one is/was the most sought-after.

Sorry, I don't know much about what's involved to fix this thing. Just queried craigs and found there are a few people in my area that can apparently fix this problem.

Any suggestions on what to do w/ my 60GB red-light blinking unit? This "upgrade" is mighty tempting...

(P.S., how do I get my old game data off too?)

I've gone through this process on my old 60GB(CECHE01) over an year ago. The system wouldn't stay on and would just flashing the red light. I even opened it up and tried the "reflow" fix but to no success. I was happy Sony accepted it back as long as the serial numbers matched on the system.

At that time it also said "for limited time only."

I definitely understand. I don't know which models exactly this works for, but if people let me know I'll change up the title/post.

nice, ill try this later for my broken 40 gb.
This might be only for the 60GB. I had mine fail awhile ago and they did this for 150 then, but they said it was only for the 60GB models (at that time) Might want to call and confirm

It doesn't have to be broken iirc, you can still upgrade it.

I wish I hadn't opened mine up (voiding the warranty) to fix mine for an extra 50 hours of life. And it doesn't help that I don't have an original sale receipt when I bought mine used from e-bay either.

But good lookin' out, OP.

Ok there is a special like oven to have it done properly. If they dont have these ovens and i doubt they do since they are around $12000 for the lowest priced ones. They will either gunk up the ps3 or do a lousy job that it might work for a very short period of time.

If the machine wont boot up you wont get your games off it. If you stick the drive in a different PS3 it will need formatting before that PS3 will boot. So that data has gone.

Sony will accept it even if you've opened it. I've done that too and they replaced it without a question. Just make sure the serial numbers are still intact.

Hmmm, so what I'm hearing is "taking advantage of this offer because you have no hope of recovering your game data or of fixing this thing to the point where it will be something that you will want to keep or someone would want to buy"?

Also, with regard to the game data, couldn't I just plug the 60gb HD into an external enclosure & xfer the raw game data from it onto a thumb drive, then load it from there onto my new PS3?

fat 60 still kicking and its more of a downgrade
Do you guys really use the backwards compatibility that much? Who plays PS2 games anymore?

Or do you use jailbreak/otherOS/etc? I just didn't use mine enough and bartered it for a nice Ibanez guitar (which I ironically use just as much - none laugh out loud)

I called my system in a couple of weeks ago to get my launch date 60GB system replaced and they offered me the 160GB system instead. The technician didn't even mention the 120GB.--->$99

In anyone's opinion, did I make the better choice in swapping out or should I just chose to get it fixed from them? --->$139.99

anyone know if the $50 shipping charge is for both ways (to and from sony)
