Deal Details

I went to get service from PlayStation for my broken and out of warranty CECHA01 (60GB) YLOD PS3 and was offered to upgrade it to a factory re-certified CECH-2501A (PS3 160GB) for $99. It comes with a 90 day limited service warranty.

Although, the offer states otherwise, you do in fact get a CECH-2501A 160GB PS3.

Service request link.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
• 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
• High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
• Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
• Two USB ports
• HDMI output for 1080p resolution
• Plays DVDs and CDs
• Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
• And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

"Frequently Asked Questions on Service :

hmm, i might "break" my 1st gen ps3 and get this. Mine is bound to crap out sometime soon.
I don't see why you'd have to "break" it--why not just send it in working? I didn't check or anything but I highly doubt they would actually require your old PS3 to be broken.

Id rather keep my backward compatible ps3
This. FixMyPlaystation.com has my 60gb right now. Bob is a good guy, since I'm local I dropped my PS3 off at his house on Saturday.

Sweet! I'm gonna try this later. My 60GB has been dead since the Spring and I didn't want to drop $150 on a Sony repair. $100 for a new PS3 though? Sold.

I uploaded my "printable confirmation for online service request" to my original post. I'm in SC, but it appears like I won't be charged tax or shipping.
From reading your confirmation, I see you have a disc stuck in the PS3. I had that too. Make sure to mention it on the form you'll get with your shipping box.
Also, how'd you avoid sales tax? Is that a SC thing?

Its not new, its refurbed. But as you can see from my posts above, I went with it to avoid any more hassles.

Have a 20gb ps3 still working... got it day it came out! might "break" it and trade in for a 120 gb. ps3 pwns!
Why would you do that? If you want a bigger hard drive just buy a 2.5 in HDD the size you want and install it in your original system. Move all your saves and stuff to a flash drive before hand and then transfer then on to the new HDD. That way you will have the backwards compatibility.

I bought mine used off of eBay about 3-4 years ago, so no receipt unfortunately. Also, already removed the sticker too as I wanted to see if I could fix it myself but stopped after I got about 3 screws in and found out it would require more skill than I probably had. That would mean warranty is void too, right?

So based on the Terms & Conditions in the OP's picture of the offer, my unit wouldn't qualify for the promotion here?

I don't have my receipt either. From my understanding you need one for in-warranty repairs not out of warranty repairs. Per the conditions: "If proof of warranty is not included with the Product you send to Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), the Product will be considered out of warranty and SCEA will charge you for any service or exchange."

I'm shocked there hasn't been a Class Action suit against Sony for the YLOD. The reason it happens is because the thermal paste dries out and the graphics chip gets so hot it breaks the soder connections.

Sony will accept it even if you've opened it. I've done that too and they replaced it without a question. Just make sure the serial numbers are still intact.
Thanks! I might give it a shot after all.
