Deal Details

I went to get service from PlayStation for my broken and out of warranty CECHA01 (60GB) YLOD PS3 and was offered to upgrade it to a factory re-certified CECH-2501A (PS3 160GB) for $99. It comes with a 90 day limited service warranty.

Although, the offer states otherwise, you do in fact get a CECH-2501A 160GB PS3.

Service request link.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
• 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
• High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
• Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
• Two USB ports
• HDMI output for 1080p resolution
• Plays DVDs and CDs
• Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
• And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

This deal is still going on, submitted a service request online for a 60G launch day and was offered a slim 160g for $129+tax(if they send the 250g, great... if not, still better than a doorstop).

There's a ton of pages to read. Will they replace a working ps3 fat?

Traded in a non-working FAT CECHA01 (which I could swear had a 20GB HD even though the model number indicates 60 GB) for a 250 GB slim for 99.00
By the way, I called Sony Direct to get this deal. The website is funky. It tried to charge me 129.00 on the payment page after the previous page said 99.

I have a fat CECHE01 that went the way of YLOD. I'm thinking of turning it in for a slim or super-slim. Does anyone have anything to say about the quality of the refurb unit they received?

$99, no tax. Not bad! I had to call like someone above mentioned. It was 129 using the online request.

The quality was pretty good. Mine just died 3 years later after doing it in December of 2011.

I've been following this thread for years just in case I ever needed to use it. I always repair my BC system because I prefer to be able to play my PS2 games but at this point I'm tired of the failures. Gonna try and go through the process and get me a slim. I'll keep you posted on if/how the process still works. Mine's a CECHE01.

Called. They offered me a emplacement. I forgot that they raised the price to $130. I already got a replacement for less than that on Craigslist. 300gb slim with 4 games. Going through the repair at these prices just isn't worth it. I can flip the broken 80gb backwards model and end up better than going the Sony route. Anyway for what it's worth. Sony is still doing this. Mostly because repairing these old ass models just won't do anyone any good. Sucks though. I lost a bunch of games/accounts and the ability to play PS2 games which I actually did quite regularly.
