Price drop: Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT 1TB 2.5" Laptop Hard Drive $140 + shipping
Deal is for Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT 1TB 5200 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
$139.99 + $7.28 shipping to 60532
I don't know how this deal compares to historical prices, but the price had been $229 on Newegg lately, presumably due to the floods in Thailand. I've been keeping an eye on prices, waiting for them to return to normal. So this is might be a "normal" deal rather than a "hot" one--be kind! But it does compare quite favorably to other retailers on Google Product Search, if you actually click through and compare to actual prices for non-refurb, non-OOS at reputable retailers.
This unit is 12.5mm tall, so make sure your laptop is compatible. Other than that, this is definitely the 1TB laptop drive with the best reputation on Newegg.
FYI, the "WD10TPVT" drive is an older version of the "WD10JPVT" model. Here's some info on the differences:
While Western Digital has had a 1 TB Scorpio Blue drive (the WD10TPVT) for some time now, it is a 3-platter design with a 31.5% thicker case, making it incompatible with most 2.5" storage bays. It also spins at a slower spindle speed of 5,200 RPM with twice the spin-up time. As such, it was only used in special applications like portable USB drives.
On 25th July, 2011, Western Digital launched the true 1 TB mobile hard disk drive model, the 1 TB Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD10JPVT). It features two new 500 GB high-density platters, which allows Western Digital to finally deliver 1 TB of storage capacity in the standard 2.5" form factor.
It doesn't say above but the newer drive "WD10JPVT" is 5400 rpm (compared to 5200 rpm). Also the 2 platters vs. 3 platters make it additionally faster.
Also, the WD10TPVT which is 12.5 will not fit in PS3s, and also, they won't fit in most Macbook Pros (I believe). Here's a comparison[tomshardware.com] of some notebook high-capacity drives.
Btw, if you're looking for a 2.5 HDD enclosure as well, I think Oyen Digital is shipping the WD10JPVT drive with their firewire enclosure[amazon.com] for $180. And I think that same drive is with this USB 3.0 enclosure[amazon.com] for $130 as well. Not sure though, you may have to ask seller.
Sorry but price is pretty terrible, just get a ssd to boost performance on laptops, the RPM is also very slow. The hybrid ssd/hd drives run for around that price as well.
Have you seen the prices of hard drives lately? B/c of the flooding in Thailand, the newer version of this model is selling for around $100 over the suggested retail b/c 1tb 2.5 drives are limited and in high demand. Hard drive production supposedly won't get back to normal till 6-12 months. Obviously the OP here needs a high-capacity drive, so I don't think a pricey SSD with limited space is what OP is looking for.
