NTSB has called for a emgergency cell phone ban in cars everywhee. No use at all. I applaud this call. There are so many idiots on the road who can't drive and talk at the same time. The worst are the textings. What we need is the cops to actually enforce the law. These things are already illegal in CA but people still do it all the time.

Well, actually.... the ban is for all electronics. It's been shown that talking on the phone is more distracting than talking to someone in person.

You know what's annoying, I can easily answer a call on my cell phone without it hampering my driving. What I can't do is make a call (i.e.- find my contact requires looking at the pone). And what I REALLY can't do, is fumble around with my farking bluetooth when a call is coming in. the notion that I can't physically hold a phone in my hand and drive is laughable. I only drive with one hand 98% of the time anyway. And if the notion is then that one can't hold a conversation and drive, well then, let's pass a law that anyone in a car has to be silent altogether.

You may think you can, just like drunk drivers think they can drive just fine as well. But the studies have shown that people can't talk on the phone without hampering their driving. Personally, I experience people with phones held up to the heads that cut me off or fail to stop almost every day. Some even hold up their phone and mouth "I'm on the phone." when I honk at them. The worst are the texters that wandering all over the road while staring down at their phones.

I hypothesize that those people are a) bad drivers to begin with, b) doing more than I claim should be allowed (texting clearly should not be, having to look down at the device does cause problems), and c) aren't skilled enough at using their electronic devices. Look, there're bad drivers out there in general. Do I get to boot them off the road? Why are we singling out bad drivers who use cell phones when the issue is the poor driving, not the REASON for the poor driving? Cops should do a better job of pulling over people who are clearly not paying attention and aren't in complete control of their cars. If you pull over and ticket more people who drive too slow, who cut people off, who veer out of their lane, who just aren't paying attention and are making generally stupid maneuvers, we can get rid of this problem. Unfortunately the vast majority of tickets are speeding and red lights. That's not to say that those are acceptable, but there're a lot of other things that aren't acceptable either.

It's a complete farce. Most accidents are caused by people eating or drinking while driving [nydailynews.com]. The cell phone ban is a just a scare tactic, a way to flex the gov't muscle, and a witch hunt.

I'd say it was another gov't conspiracy to cut down on communication, but then the gov't would have to be involved for that to be true. The NTSB would have to put out a report or something.
