Price seems high...by about 70 beans.
While the M40 was $699...and then $599, it has been selling at $349 and lower for the last month or two. I actually purchased the M41 (32GB and viewfinder) for $399 several weeks ago...and that (higher-end) model has sold even lower ($349 at B&H one day last month). I think that you should be able to get the M40 for $349...and if not, I would hold out until you can. EDIT: It is now $349 at Adorama: http://www.adorama.com/CAHFM40.ht...adl-google I missed the fact that your link was to a bundle. |

Basically you are paying $67, extra for the bag, memory card and extra battery. Extra batteries are always a buy; the camera bag (some cheap sales out there) & memory cards for $19! Feel the extras are just worth about $70, anyway. So, let's wait for the camera to come down a little more.
*Went and checked on the battery BAP819. From amazon, buy and a couple of other stores. It runs about $80 from them. From this store quoted about $99. So, based upon the that data, I will change my vote to neutral. Last edited by dondeal80; 12-13-2011 at 02:05 PM.. |

The battery is not Canon, despite the photo that shows "Canon Inc". It says below the bundle what specific products are included and it shows the Power2000 ACD-762 battery which they sell for $39, and is only $19 on Amazon.
16GB of Class 10 SDHC is $19 on Amazon, and $35 for 32G. I guess $17 may be okay for the 16G Class 6 card that's included, but it seems like everything new now is Class 10, so why bother with lesser. Recent everyday prices on these have been: M400 (0GB internal and no viewfinder) : $329 M40 (16GB internal and no viewfinder) : $349 M41 (32GB internal and viewfinder) : $399 So if you actually wanted the M40 + that Class 6 16G card + Power2000 battery, it should cost $349+$17+$19=$385. You're paying $32 more for the other stuff thrown in there (bag, dvd, wipe, whatever). Not a good deal in my mind if you actually wanted all this stuff. If you didn't want all this stuff, then definitely not a good deal, buying stuff you don't want and paying more. I'm in the market for one of these camcorders and have been watching the prices recently. I think Canon's pricing difference ($20) between the M400 and M40 is reasonable for the 16G difference, however one can argue that it's better to get the M400 for $20 cheaper and then just buy a 16G card so that way you're in full control of that flash device and can replace it if there's an issue or use it for other purposes - more versatile that way. So I'd probably buy either of these if the price drops more on one than the other. $319 for the M400 the other day on Amazon wasn't enough to make me bite. Now the M41 for $399 ($70 more) than the base M400 gets you 32G and viewfinder. Consider $35 value for 32G, that means the viewfinder is $35 also. That's not too bad either. I think Canon has priced these reasonably relative to each other. I'd go for the viewfinder if this price drops further as well. I didn't see the one day that the M41 dropped to $349, but would have bought at that. Hope that helps others. |
