well extended warranties through a brick and mortal questionable imo... If it is relatively inexpensive under $50 bucks then consider buying it if the equipment you're buying cost a lot of money north of $500.. That is the rule of thumb i take when purchasing extended warranties.
Above $50 dollars I usually stay away from buying it because it is not worth it imo because most of the time the things we buy at big box shops will last a few years before you experience any problems with it -- especially big electronics. You also need to take into consideration manufacturer warranty albeit it is a pain in the behind and a lot of time wasted being on hold, manufacturers provide one solution in eliminating a future defect.
One thing you need to know though, big box warranties = great protection but they are also big revenue generators for them. Most items will last during the period and the problems usually occur after.
