The same model sold 2 on Ebay through Buy.com for $243 on December 18th. So I would say this is a really good price, and fast free shipping. I had one of these before with the smaller hard drive. It was very nice and the recording was very easy to do. Just make sure you have the dish box on and tuned in to the program you wish to record. It saves a good deal of money over renting a box or paying Tivo fees. It was also nice to have the choice to record it to Dvd. I got rid of mine because everything I watched could be viewed through HULU. I have started watching shows that aren't on there, and I can't watch them live either. I bought just a dvd recorder, but i'm debating moving back up to this. Also they have free shipping to your house or to the store. It sounds like if you purchase Monday December 19th or Tuesday December 20th you can still get free standard delivery by Christmas!

If this link doesn't work you can simply search for the model number on Walmart.com

No HD, no built-in QAM tuner. Essentially obsolete, but if you think you're never going to go to a flat-panel set, it might be OK.

Just FYI.

You don't need the tuner if you are running it after the cable box, dish box, or any other similar device.

It upscales to 1080p (which your HDTV can do anyway). DVDs are only SD, not HD. It does not have an HD input, so there's no way it could record HD.

If you want to record HD without a TiVo, try this [hauppauge.com] for only a few dollars more (no, it doesn't have a built-in DVD recorder, and it requires a connection to a PC with available hard drive space, but it's the only device I'm aware of that can record from HD from a cable box).

But you still have to pay to rent the box. At least with a TiVo, while you're spending more initially, you only have to rent a cablecard, which is usually cheaper.

It upscales Dvds, but if you have Dish Network or Directv then they would be broadcasting HD through to the DVR. So you could be recording HD quality directly to the hard drive. If you have Dish Network or Directv then you need to have a box and it doesn't matter if you have a tuner. So you would be eliminating the higher cost of a DVR for these services and still have HD recording. So people with Dish or similar services would be able to save money and still have HD.

They would be broadcasting HD, but this box has only SD inputs (composite or S-Video). You need component video, DVI or HDMI for HD, therefore there is no way that it can record in HD. Here's the manual [philips.com] if you don't believe me.

Does this device have a Program Guide (like TiVo) or will the shows need to be recorded manually based on the show times?

You can set it up on a weekly basis by the day of the week and the time. So you can easily record a whole season of something. The on screen programing guide was very easy to use on the one I had. It looks the same, but this one has a larger hard drive.

All you have to do is think about the reason you haven't seen Bluray recorders. It's because the paranoid folks at the MPAA went to court to stop manufactures from making them about 5 years ago. They're afraid of people making exact digital copies of TV shows/movies. It's also why you don't see HDMI inputs on recorders and also why you can't daisy-chain HDMI gear.

As far as this unit putting out HD, there are plenty of DVD recorders with built-in ATSC tuners but that doesn't mean it's HD...just that it can receive the digital TV signal over the air.

This is technically not a DVR. It's more of a DVD recorder with a built in hard drive. You can't click on a show in a channel guide and have it record automatically. It has to be programmed like a VCR timer.

This was around the same price through Target a month ago, and it can be firmware upgraded to do what the 500gb model does. ALSO: The RF output is a pass through, it does not provide any sort of modulated (QAM, ntsc channel 3/4) output at all.

Why do you think this isn't technically a DVR? A DVR is technically a Digital Video Recorder. That is exactly what the item does. It may not be able to do it in HD or exactly like another brand, but it still records digital video just like stated, right?
