Amazon is only concerned with you maintaining your service for six months with Sprint. If you fail to maintain it for six months, Amazon will charge you $250.
So for first 6 months, you deal with Sprint as well as Amazon. After 6 months, you deal with only Sprint (about ETF issues etc).

Any time you purchase a discounted phone, you have to extend your contract. If you don't want contractual obligation, you can purchase it off any retailers or eBay or CL etc for a retail price. If you purchase a used phone for activation on your account, just call Sprint to verify that you will be activate that particular ESN is valid for activation.
