That's why you need to find a dentist that was referred to you. Going to the dentist is not that expensive even if you dont have insurance. You can expect to pay like 100-150 for x-rays and cleaning. That twice a year is not bad imo. First impressions is everything

I agree. But the reason for it is the lawyers. Health care costs in the US are expensive in large part due to malpractice suits. We seriously need tort reform.

To give people an example of the differences. A tooth implant in the US is about $5000 per tooth. In the rest of the world, at world class hospitals, it's about $1000 a tooth.

Not true, unless you're in California, Massachusetts, or some other business/treatment provider unfriendly state.

Can dental care be expensive? Certainly, if you don't take care of yourself. There are plenty of dental discount plans out there (take Careington, for example) that cut the costs dramatically, though, and when you compare the cost of some dental work to any treatment at a hospital ($400+ just to visit an ER) it's not nearly so bad.

Heck, plenty of folks spend more money on hair styling, eating out, and junk food than their dental health. Life's about priorities, for better or worse.

Kudos to these guys for their work, though; I know firsthand it's much needed. +rep x4 and TU for the post, OP.

Yeah, $200 for a 20 minutes cleaning when the person doing the cleaning is making $20/hr. If you need any kind of dental work it's almost always cheaper to buy a round trip plane ticket to almost any other country, get a nice hotel, rent a car, and have the work done there.

I guess I need to find a dentist that I can trust. I feel like I am being taken when I walk in. I am in serious need of getting a tooth that I cracked either pulled or filled before it breaks and I am in real pain but I can hear it now "You need a root canal and crown" and I can't afford that. I can afford to get it pulled, filled, capped but not a root canal and crown.

Pretty sure Hygentists make more than $20/ hr and usually the dentist only checks the teeth after unless a procedure is needed. Would you want someone making $10/hr working on your teeth? Don't think so...

There's no reason why you can't shop around. Those procedures are expensive but you can usually get on a payment plan. Doctors and dentists can tell you whatever you want. At least my dentist tells me the truth (or I hope so) and gives me the options and lets me choose what I want to do.

Can anybody recommend an affordable and trustable dental insurance?

Sounds true. I feel like I am taking my car in for repairs, I am at the mercy of the repairman and have to trust what he says because I know nothing about a car except where to fill it up.Same with my teeth. I know when I am in pain but do I really need that expensive root canal instead of a filling? I had a dentist tell me I needed a root canal on a molar and I told them I was sure I had one on that tooth already and said I would be back. I went to another dentist and told him what that dentist said and he said I was right and he was actually as pissed as I was because it makes all dentisst look bad when one dentist rips a patient off.

While I agree on a very basic level, it isn't as easy as you suggest. I am about to start Dental School. I've already been in school 4 Years, and will be in another 5 Years. I'll be around $350,000 in Student Loan Debt from Dental School alone. Then I have to have a building and Equipment in the tune of around 1 Million. Then I have a staff and malpractice insurance along with all the other expenses. Then to tack that on, I'm now in the so called 1% and pay 35% taxes along with being the bane of anyone not in the 1%.

I'll be lucky to bring home $150,000 BEFORE taxes..take out student loan debt, taxes, etc.. and I'm probably going to have around 3-4k a month. So please don't tell me that we charge too much, without some offering of how to fix something else in the system.
