AFAIK, you need to have at least the 1912 (or at least network connectivity of some sort on the receiver itself) for app functionality. The Denon website [denon.com] has a complete list of compatible "Streaming Media" equipment.

So do u rec the 1712 over the 1912 if a sub is involved? My husband is obsessed w this app functionality so is pushing the 1912, but i dont think the cost over the 1712 is justified. Thnx.

If sound quality is the top priority, I'd favor the 1712 or 2112ci over the 1912. If he wants the 1912 primarily for the Airplay/Apple integration, you could get a 1712 and an AppleTV for an extra $100 and accomplish the same thing (and then some). But if he wants the Denon app primarily to control the receiver itself and not Airplay in particular, the 1912 and 2112ci are his cheapest (Denon) options. I'm not saying the 1912 is a bad receiver, I just personally place the priority on sound quality and don't have much need for an app or Airplay.

Have you looked into the Yamaha RX-A710? I still think the Denon is a better bet for sound quality, particularly the 1712 and 2112ci, but the A710 also has app/DLNA /Airplay(whoops, no Airplay) functionality and is currently on sale at Newegg for $300 [newegg.com]. (Ack -- showing out of stock now)
