I havent won $H1T .....Horray!!!!!
I enter everyday, with as many enteries as I can and haven't won nothing. So depressing. How does SD go about choosing their winners. Do they pull the winners out of a hat? Are the winners randomly chosen by computer? Zip code? State? What are the odds of me winning?

Randomly picked via computer program. You have only been here a little over a year...believe me there are many people here who have been trying for many more years than you and still waiting to have their number picked. As far as your odds...I'll let you do the math. For any given contest look at how many entries there are, look at how many entries you were given...then guess on a number of entries average per entrant and there ya go.

Psh. I haven't won anything either. I keep leaving money on Schooby's desk but I still don't win. It's not fair.

I think not enough bonuses are given to people who post new contests..#nods to self# why reward only those who post deals that make it to the front page?

Always give up.
There's being frugal, and there's being obnoxiously cheap, please learn the difference. Also if you find yourself getting into heated arguments online about things like lossless audio, re-assess your life.

Personally, I'm very disappointed in the way SD handles giveaways and contests.
First, yes, I understand that it's a free prize for nothing and people might say "you shouldn't complain about free", but that doesn't change my point of view and reasoning. Every so often I scroll down the list of winners for various prizes, and it seems that nine times out of ten it's some brand new user with zero feedback who, if you look at their user history, does nothing on this site other than enter contests. Slickdeals.net doesn't sell a product. Well, technically it does - it sells US, it's userbase to advertisers. However, the core of it's business stems from the value it gets solely derived from the content and contribution of it's users. If it wasn't for a dedicated group of members, a very small minority of members, contributing to the site on a daily basis, there would be no Slickdeals. Think about it. Almost every deal on here is posted by regular (ie: non-employee) people. That in turn brings other active contributing users who post updates and other information. Which in turn brings thousands to tens of thousands of non-contributing members and guests to view the posts. Which in turn brings ad revenue to the site and the company/employees. That ad revenue is what funds their paychecks, all the administrative fees of the site itself, and the prizes they give away. Take away the bottom layer, and the rest disappears. And yet, it's those people who, by the very nature of the way the giveaway program is structured, don't get rewarded or even recognized (in any substantial means) for their contribution, dedication and service. Just look at the way you can garner entries into the contests. You only get ONE entry for every 200 reps you have. Only five entries for every Frontpage deal in the last four months. Only two entries for every hot topic deal you post. Only one entry for every 3-months your account has been online. And only one entry for every seven days of active browsing. And yet, any random schlub on the street can get 15 entries for "liking" them on Facebook. Another 15 entries for tweeting about the deal. 20 entries for signing up for some deal alert spam. And up to 400 more entries for getting friends to just sign up. Sure, the veteran and contributing users can still get those entries as well, but that's not the point. The way the system is setup, any random person can come here, signup for an account, and do nothing but enter contests, and if they spend about 5 minutes jumping through some hoops, can get around 100 entries into each contest. And yet the "bonus" for being a long-time contributing member only garners you maybe 20-40 more points on top of that. That, in my opinion, is a horrible way of demonstrating loyalty to the people who are the ones really responsible for making Slickdeals what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow. I understand that one of the reasons for the contest is to bring in new users. The larger the user base, the more they can get from advertising revenue, and the bigger and more profitable the company gets (which isn't necessarily a good thing for the rest of us...). I have no issue with this, and understand why they want to reward referrals and signing up for sponsored ads. BUT, don't forget about the people who do more than just lurk and sign up for free stuff. In my opinion, the entry rewards for veterans/contributors should be at least double or triple what they are now. You want to give 15 entries for linking your Facebook account? Fine. Then you should be giving at least 15 entries for every year of membership. And 5 entries for a FRONT PAGE thread? Pfft. That should be 50. Point being, if you want to reward every one who comes to the site and joins, that's fine. But the rewards for active and veteran members should be significantly higher. In the end, the Winner List should be mostly those people. I love Slickdeals, and have been an active and contributing member since almost Day One. But the reason I love this site isn't because of the employees (no offense) or the "product". It's because of the community of people here. I've spent many memorable hours/days/weeks hunting for the Big Deal, and had a great time with others doing it too. But Slickdeals needs to remember that without that community, you wouldn't have a site. And in turn, when you offer special prizes and giveaways, you should give a real bonus to those people. Not some minuscule, and in some ways insulting, attaboy pat on the back. My two cents. |

It's something that can be discussed in our next meeting ...not saying it's sure to change how things are done but we do listen. |
