Sorry, but I find these follow-up posts quite amusing.
What people are basically saying is: "I don't contribute and therefore I don't have any reps or a high post count. So I don't want Slickdeals to give people who do a better chance at winning." |

No matter how it is run there will be a number of people who aren't happy.

However, from a "business decision" point of view, if you had to pick one or the other, who would it make more sense to keep "happy"? The people who only join the site to sign up for the contests and do nothing else, or the people who actively contribute to the site and are the reason why you have people come here in the first place? No content = no viewers = no advertising revenue = no more contests anyway.

Since I view 1000's of ads on a daily basis on this site in contest forum, they are making money from it. And yes they track click throughs on other things besides ad clicks...including of all things contests. Their referral code is appended to sites they have deals with when you click through to a contest site (just as if they were a deal). My point is if subforums are not profitable from ads displayed, its likely because a bad business deal is in place vs the potential for profit that exists in a well tailored marketing campaign. |

![]() Actually only ads clicked through generate income. Companies like Adchoices and Google have click frauds checks in place to prevent abuse aswell. When someone posts any url, SD appends its id to all the urls posted to get incentive on the sale but not every merchant pays for a referral. Are you telling when someone posts a youtube link and SD adds its tag it gets an incentive for the post. I very much doubt SD gets anything when Meritline deals are posted and definately nothing when you post a contest for Womens Day Journal to win a Cuisinart. Not because of a bad business model but simply because these places dont offer affiliate incentives. Last edited by Scampsters; 06-21-2012 at 08:43 AM.. |

I don't even understand your youtube example or how that is relevant to my discussion on contests being viable, because clearly that is an apples and oranges comparison. |

Unless you click on an ad at the top of your screen how would SD know your sitting there reading it(maybe they secretly they installed a spy cam in my room better wear pants) Revenue is generated by clickthrough not all clickthrough generates revenues i cant put it any simpler. SD gets 0 revenue from people clicking on links in the contest forum because none of the companies sponsoring contests even have an affiliate program set up to track and monitor. If someone subscribes to magazine as a result of entering a contest. a) The magazine doesnt tell SD here is some $$$ b) SD has no way to even tell what you did after leaving the SD site unless they have an agreement with the Merchant like for instance Amazon affiliate program. SD has thousands of people on its site every single day but unlike FATWALLET they dont advertise for specific merchants or charge merchants to advertise on SD. they have no control what ads are displayed and most people have banner ads blocked anyway. Setup a website and add google banners to one corner and see where you get income or dont. IF SD removed the lounge, finance forum , freebies, contests and gamers lounge there would be 0 income streams lost. People might get upset and no longer participate on SD (which i doubt really would happen despite what they say) but there would be zero $ direct loss of revenue. They are there as a social place to keep members happy. Last edited by Scampsters; 06-21-2012 at 09:11 AM.. |
