Deal Details

Russian made Saiga rifles. IMHO, these are the highest quality AK's made.
Based on the AK-47 design, produced on the same Russian assembly line.

These are popular military calibers -- that means cheaper ammo.

These do not have the pistol grip, but you can do a conversion and put one on for $100 or so.

Saiga 12 shotguns are $499.

Not bad, this is the bee knees in terms of easy to get AKs. The WASRs leave much to be desired, the Saigas are still made in the Izhmash factory. True russian made. Though you can get a Vodka Special ( google it lol ) They are some of the nicest ones out there for the price. if you spend a bit more you can get a nice Arsenal etc.

I got one about 12 years ago and did the mod, put tapco stuff on it. Sadly I never did put in the feeder ramp, probably the most difficult part (although not that difficult).

Another strategy for buying one of these is to find a local gun shop with one of these in stock, go there, and ask them if they will meet this price. Take the cash with you.

Hasn't this been the going price for sometime now? I was gonna buy one a few months ago and this was the price at the time.

Arsenal is considered to be the highest quality (fit and finish) AK on the market but the Saiga's are very good quality also (fit and finish isn't as refined).

I read somewhere that the Saiga doesnt accept the standard AK mag, only ones manufactured specifically for the Saiga. True?

Note the discussion above: find a guide, all you need to do is get the right size pipe, cut it properly and fix it into the trunion. Just make sure you have a good drill bit, the saiga is pretty well hardened.

So why buy, or put together, an AR for more than twice the price? (Real question!)
  • Both reliably go 'bang!' when the trigger is squeezed
  • AR=6" grouping at X yards, AK=10" at same? (Little less accurate?)
  • Both about the same weight (?)
  • Both are obviously military-grade rifles (same 'coolness' factor, for any so interested)
  • Same ammo
  • Roughly the same magazine capacity
  • Same type of sights (?)
  • Cleaning difficulty about the same
Then does it just come down to American/western design vs eastern? Like I wanna AR (at twice the price) because it "feels" better? (In that case, my wallet would feel better with the money still in it.) Smilie

Yugoslavian AKMs should also be considered if you're looking for a high quality AK-47 type rifle. And unlike Saiga's, they are compatible with most mags and they do not have the additional design features that prevent converting the gun to fully auto on the fly.
